The head of the SUSU Office of International Relations Artyom Ponomaryov took part in a Fulbright educational grant program. He talked about the opportunities, the three visits to American universities, and his ideas on how we can compete with them.
– Tell us about the Fulbright program and its goals?
From May 2nd to 5th the 13th Russian club tournament of the Association of Student Sport Clubs Russia among Student Teams will be held in Chelyabinsk. Chelyabinsk is holding this event for the second time.
More than 240 students from all around Russia are taking part in this competition. The schedule for the Russian Club Tournament includes competition in 6 sport disciplines and testing for the ASSC student competition. The tournament also includes the first time ever (for this event) flatball competition among University teams.
On April 26th in the Sigma conference hall a lecture was held by professor Jeff Sahadeo of Carleton University (Canada) on the topic: “Soviet Moscow as a ‘global city’: Migration and Postcolonialism (comparison with London and Paris.)”
The opening of the IV Annual Exhibition of Scientific and Creative Works of South Ural State University Students was held on April 26th. Every institute and higher school presented developments, projects, and research work completed under the guidance of the University’s leading teachers and pedagogical staff.

On May 4th a dance flash mob will be held dedicated to the 72nd anniversary of the great victory, Victory Waltz, will be held for the third time already on the square in front of the SUSU main building. This year, the event will be supported by the stage legends, everyone’s favorite vocal and instrumental ensemble, Ariel.

Discussion about the risks and benefits of meat is one of the most popular topics on the Internet. Expert in meat production from the SUSU Higher School of Medicine and Biology, candidate of technical sciences, Lina Tsirulnichenko, believes that meat is a necessary product for a balanced diet.
Celebration of Alut Avurudu – the national new year in the traditions of the islands of Sri Lanka – was held at SUSU on April 24th. Sri Lankan students introduced university staff, students, and teachers to their national customs. They celebrated their national holiday within the walls of SUSU for the second time.
The “KSTATI. Coordinate system” science festival wrapped up on April 21st in Chelyabinsk, held in the city for the first time. South Ural State University became the largest venue for this huge event, holding the opening ceremonies for KSTATI and one of the most interesting events within the festival.
On April 25th at South Ural State University the contest “Scientific Potential – 2017” will begin. The contest is aimed at offering financial assistance to post-graduate students to help them complete their scientific projects and increase the publication activity of the University’s young researchers. Upon completion of their projects, the post-graduates must publish articles in the world’s leading journals.

On April 24th a Rock, Paper, Scissors championship was held on the square in front of SUSU. The Student Council of the SUSU Higher School of Electronics and Computer Sciences organized the event. This event was held for the first time and a limited number of people participated – 16 people.
“We were holding the event as a sort of test to entertain students,” says competition organizer, Andrey Puschev.
The Immortal Regiment movement, unprecedented in its size, will be held on the 72ndanniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. It has become a popular pat of the Victory Parade and has brought together more than 12 million people in its ranks. In Chelyabinsk, the march begins May 9thnear the SUSU main building at 15:00.
The final day of the “KSTATI. Coordinate system” Science Festival (Friday, April 21st) will be remembered by Chelyabinsk residents for its unique events. Among them – a teleconference with CERN and the premier of the Science Drama project. The final event will be the popular science talk show “Examine down to the atoms”.
From April 25th through April 30th, professor Jeff Sahadeo of Carleton University (Canada) will be coming to SUSU to read lectures. Jeff Sahadeo, historian and political scientist by trade, heads the Institute of European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies at Carleton University and is considered a reputable specialist in migration studies.
On April 17th at the Institute of Linguistics and International Communications a meeting was held between students and the director of the Confucius Institute, Ning Huaiying.
South Ural State University is known as a school who trains the strongest engineering specialists for good reason. Students of the second and third years of study create race cars for competition under the leadership of the team captain – master’s student Grigoriy Salimonenko.
On April 18th the opening of the “KSTATI. Coordinate System” Science Festival was held at the South Ural State University conference hall. It began with the popular science show, Superhero Trial, where Master Yoda, Wolverine, and Thor ended up on the defendant’s bench.
Graduate of School of Medical Biology, and nowadays a top-manager of the national water company Niagara Denis Baturin graduated from SUSU in 2003 in the specialty “Commodity Expert”. In an exclusive interview with our reporter, Denis Georgievich shared his recollections of the study years at the University, told us how the obtained knowledge help him building a successful career, and also provided some advice to the future graduates.
Since 10 years already, our University and the National Engineering School of Saint-Etienne (ENISE, France) have identified their common interest in the field of advanced manufacturing technologies. Six students of SUSU have done an academic year in the ENISE by participating in a Master in Science Program or in a doctoral studies program covering different modern technologies of direct manufacturing and surface engineering. Mutual visits of teaching stuff and researchers and lecturers of our institutions have become a regular practice for us.
A video conference with the Skolkovo Innovation Fund will be held at South Ural State University on April 26th, 2017. Presentations will be given within this event by Skolkovo employees Yuriy Sibirskiy and Maksim Sudakov.
In addition, possible resident projects of the Skolkovo Innovative Fund will be presented and these projects will be analyzed by representatives of industrial-specific clusters.
The selection stage for the Electrical energy and metallurgy league of the V International Engineering Competition Case-In was held on April 19th at South Ural State University, in which student teams complete engineering case studies from materials of the industry’s leading companies and defend their ideas in front of an expert commission - all in 10 days.
On April 24th at the Sigma building, Alut Avurudu will be celebrated. Alut Avurudu is the National New Year in Sri Lankan (Ceylon) tradition.
Alut Avurudu is a family holiday. On this day, Sri Lankans located outside of their home country try to return home. SUSU students from this country decided to share the joy of this holiday with their teachers and university friends.
On April 19 and 20 South Ural State University is hosting Blood Donor Day, when everyone who volunteers can donate blood. The National Blood Donor Day is celebrated annually on April 20. On this day 185 years ago the first successful blood transfusion was performed in Russia. The procedure was performed by a young obstetrician from Saint Petersburg Andrey Wolf; the blood donor for a woman who lost a lot of blood while giving birth to a child had become her husband.
Master Class of a Russian TV journalist, media trainer, academician of the Eurasian Academy of Television and Radio, Vasily Korelskiy, was held at SUSU in the framework of the popular Science Festival KSTATI. The major question of the event was whether PR specialists and journalists are friends or foes. Students not only got the answer to this question, but also learned how science can be reflected in professions related to media sphere.
