Medications to Treat Coronavirus and Wholesome Products Elaborated at SUSU

In the Year of Science and Technology, declared in Russia,South Ural State Universitycontinues working on a number of studies in most of the priority areas. One of them is New Medicine. SUSU scientists are not only developing treatment regimens for various diseases, but also designing medicines and creating useful products.

Medical research at South Ural State University is conducted by members of theSchool of Medical Biology. Much attention is paid to post-traumatic stress disorder.

At the Laboratory for Neurohepatology the scientists are working with the complex cases of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which can be caused by chronic trauma. Scientists have elaborated its experimental model to study the mechanisms of the disease development. The main goal is to determine how to provide people with PTSD with not only mental but also physical health.

Scientists have discovered that PTSD negatively affects the liver, kidneys, and even the heart.

“The latest research reveals the mechanism of cardiac complications in case of PTSD. It is connected with an insufficient level of stress hormones and the development of oxidative stress. Further work on the topic is related to the search for the most effective method for correcting cardiac complications in the experiment. It is clear that in addition to psychological help, people with PTSD will also need supportive cardiotherapy,” said Doctor of Sciences (Biology), Professor, Director of the SUSU School of Medical Biology Vadim Tseylikman.

The results of each experiment help to develop new ways to improve the effectiveness of drug therapy for PTSD in the clinic.

The Laboratory of Computational Modelling of Drugs is engaged in studying medications. Its staff members elaborate methods to improve many antiviral, immunomodulatory and antineoplastic agents, including vital ones. Work is currently being done on creating medications to fight tuberculosis, breast cancer and HIV.

Besides, the researchers also paid attention to the burning issue of the coronavirus. The laboratory team won the Russian Foundation for Basic Research BRICS contest, presenting their research to find effective medicine to fight Covid-19 and to identify natural substances that can fight different viruses.

Such substances prove to be effective not only in medicines, but also when consumed in food. Functional food products created on their basis can be used as a substitute for medicines or in conjunction with them. Research in this area is carried out at the Laboratory for Synthesis and Analysis of Food Ingredients and at the laboratory of the Department of Production Technology and Catering Organization of the SUSU Institute of Sport, Tourism and Service.

South Ural State University is a university of digital transformations, where innovative research is conducted in most of the priority areas of development of science and technology. In accordance with the strategy of scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation, the university is focused on elaborating major scientific interdisciplinary projects in the field of digital industry, materials science and ecology. In the Year of Science and Technology, SUSU will take part in the Priority-2030 program contest. The university also acts as a regional project office of the World-class Ural Interregional Research and Education Centre (UIREC).
