Last weekend Gagarin Sports Competition 2018 event was held at SUSU. Students competed in various sports: from chess to table tennis.
The event was held under the guidance of the Deputy Dean of Sports Rashit Shaikhetdinov. The majority of students opted for competitions in chess. Each game was individual, some people played for speed, some people thought every move through. The participants competed not only with their groupmates but also with senior students.
The Young Progressors Olympiad for schoolchildren took place at South Ural State University. The event was organized by the SUSU Faculty of Aerospace Engineering.
The Olympiad is held for the 8th time, bringing together many schoolchildren studying in 5th-11th grades of general education institutions (gymnasiums, lyceums, schools), students of college and professional lyceums.
The fifth edition of Worldwide Professional University Rankings RankPro 2017/2018 was published on the portal of the International Council of Scientists www.cicerobook.com.
As compared to the results of the previous year in 2018 South Ural State University climbed from position 573 up to 414 in the general world ranking, and from position 37 up to 12 in RankPro 2017/2018 ranking among Russian universities.
On April 3 of 2018, results of the IoT Samsung Academy contest for opening education centers were summarized, an by the results SUSU was granted the right to open a unique training laboratory for studying IoT technologies (IoT is for Internet of Things) on its grounds on the basis of solutions of Samsung Company, the world’s leader in the sphere of information technology and radio electronics.
On April 4 of 2018, a lecture by Director of the Polytechnic Institute, Doctor of Engineering Sciences, Professor Sergey Dmitrievich Vaulin entitled “The history of schools of sciences – scholarly traditions of the university” was held at SUSU within the frameworks of the vocational enhancement program entitled “Corporate Culture of the University”.

World Table Tennis Day is celebrated on April 6. Initiator for establishing the new sport holiday was International Table Tennis Federation in 2015.
Anton Shcherbak, a graduate of South Ural State University, decided to dedicate his life to table tennis. The athlete told us, from what did his sport career started, how SUSU helped with this, and what goals the graduate has today.
On March 28th an opening ceremony for the All-Russian Contest-Conference for Undergraduates was held at Saint-Petersburg Mining University. Within the course of three days 214 young scientists from 30 leading Russian universities were delivering their presentations under 35 topics in this city on the banks of Neva River.
The presentations of the forum’s participants were devoted to such issues as prospecting and exploration of the fields of mineral resources, oil and gas geology, blasting work, well drilling, mine surveying, environment protection, and many others.
SUSU students gained the opportunity to take part in SMM Ural 2018 Urals Social Media Marketing Forum. The organizers chose 28 participants to attend the forum for free, and students from South Ural State University were among them.

Amir Ali, a student of South Ural State University who came to Chelyabinsk from Iraq, has created a plaster sculpture for SUSU Museum.
Student Amir Ali came to Chelyabinsk almost 5 months ago. According to his words, he is very happy to study at the largest university of the Ural. Out of thanks for his invitation to SUSU, he decided to make a plaster sculpture as a gift to the university.

Not so long ago, the majority of new materials were discovered by the scientific community by mistake or by the method of trial and error. Today, the task of theoretical prediction of the structure and properties of new crystalline materials has become especially topical. Thus, researchers from South Ural State University have developed a method to predict crystalline structures of substances, the basis of which is the application of evolutionary algorithms.

The Days of Student Science contest was held on March 28th as part of the all-Russian festival at SUSU.
The goal of the event is to support gifted students, encourage their creative activities, and form motivation for performing research work, the results of which can be transformed in to in-demand products. The festival is already traditional for SUSU and is giving students the chance to present and defend their projects for the fifth time now.
