First-year Students Days Wrapped up at the SUSU Institute of Engineering and Technology

First-year Students Days were held at the SUSU Institute of Engineering and Technology September 1st through September 3rd. Students learned more about their specialities, heads of departments, academic staff members and the structure of the university. On the first day, a meeting with the leadership of the Institute of Engineering and Technology and the teaching staff with the students was organised, on the second day, they were taken on a tour round laboratories and research and education centres, and on September 3rd they participated in the sports event.

On September 2nd, the Institute of Engineering and Technology held tours round the SUSU laboratories and research and education centres for first-year students.

Students of the Faculty of Automotive Engineering visited laboratory of triboengineering, engines testing, engines design, the laboratory of special-purpose machines and transmissions, and the Bolid Student Design Bureau.

Students of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering were taken on a tour round the educational laboratory of aerospace engineering, the Asteroid Student Design Bureau, the hall of ammunition and detonators, the centre for vibration testing and monitoring the state of structures, and the aviation training centre.

Students of the Materials Science and Technologies programme were actively involved in practical work, trained on welding simulators, tried to create rings using laser welding, studied the structures of various materials on microscopes at the Nanotechnology Research and Education Centre, cast blanks at the Laboratory of Modern Metallurgical Technologies, and found out about modern methods of 3D printing at the Fab Lab of 3D Prototyping and Computer Modelling.

First-year students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering visited the Mechanical Engineering Research and Education Centre and the Fab Lab of Mechanical Engineering, the Laboratory of CNC Training Machines, Pneumatic Drives, Pneumatic Automation and Automation of Technological Processes, as well as the Laboratory of Electrical Safety and Study of Materials Structure.

Tours round the Thermal Processes Simulation Laboratory, Ergonomics in Thermal Power Engineering Teaching Laboratory, Energy Saving and Power Quality Teaching Laboratory, Power Electronics Teaching Laboratory, Power System Operations Teaching Laboratory, Automated Electric Drive Laboratory, Mechatronics and Robotics Laboratory were organized for students of the Faculty of Energy and Power Engineering.

After lunch, the students went to the laboratories and halls of self-perfection in sports of the SUSU Institute of Sport, Tourism and Service. The freshmen were shown a swimming pool of international level, the Olimp sports gym, an indoor athletic stadium and the Centre for Express Assessment of the Human Health Status.

The following day, a big sports festival at the SUSU Sports Palace was organised for students of the Institute of Engineering and Technology. More than 400 first-year students took part in competitions in volleyball, basketball, table tennis, strength sports (such as pull-ups, push-ups, jump rope), fitness master classes (such as jumping, step aerobics, yoga, stretching, various dance styles), and demonstration performances in boxing and kickboxing were also organized.

During all three days, the Institute of Engineering and Technology held a contest among groups for the most active attendance of all events dedicated to the First-year Students Days.

Results of the Contest:

1st place awarded to the group П-155 (the group will receive free tickets for the autumn Miass Rope Training);

2nd place awarded to the group П-112 (the group will receive tickets to the movie theatre);

3rd place awarded to the group П-177 (the group will receive tickets to the theatre).
