International Translation Day is celebrated September 30th. The holiday was officially established by the International Federation of Translators (FIT) in 1991. In 2017, Resolution No. A /RES/71/288, in which the role of professional translation in connecting nations and fostering peace, understanding and development is recognised, was unanimously adopted at the 71st session of the UN General Assembly, and September 30th was declared the International Translation Day, celebrated within the framework of the UN.

The Final of the Prometheus Russian Student Olympiad in English was held in the SUSU Sigma building in the end of last week.
The Olympiad has first been organized in 2012, and since then it is held annually. Participants include students in their first and second year of full-time study. Contests are held throughout the whole academic year on various topics, including foreign languages.
A young scientist from South Ural State University was awarded the prestigious medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The researcher was noted for working with chemical compounds that have proved high effectiveness in the fight against tuberculosis.

Yesterday evening, a meet-the-artist event was held for students at SUSU with actress and TV host Katerina Shpitsa within the framework of Predchustvie (Anticipation) Film Festival. The meeting took place in the form of a dialogue. The star of such films as, Iron Ivan, Yolki 1914, Yolki 5, and The Crimean Bridge spoke on how she made it to the cinema industry, on the specific features of working on set, and shared her plans for the future.
An exhibition of a mobile museum of weapons and memorabilia of the Great Patriotic War has opened at the Military Training Centre of South Ural State University, where the findings by the Chelyabinsk Region's scouting movement on the Sinyavino heights of the Leningrad Region have been exhibited.
The exhibition was opened by Konstantin Krikunov, Deputy Head of the Military Training Centre at SUSU.
The development of the “Smart City” concept is not over yet. Scientists from the Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics have estimated the scale of urban greening and found out how it affects the improvement of air quality in Chelyabinsk. The results of the research were published in the highly rated scientific journal “Biodiversitas. Journal of Biological Diversity "(Q1).

The Museum of SUSU History has collected materials about the organization of South Ural State University, which was originally called the Chelyabinsk Mechanical Engineering Institute.
Computer vision and image recognition will help solve the problem of a shortage of parking spaces in Chelyabinsk. As part of the work on the Smart City program, scientists from South Ural State University proposed using the already installed CCTV cameras to identify vacant parking spaces with a specially developed program that will collect data and notify the driver about parking spaces in the nearest parking lot.
The closing ceremony of the German-Russian Year of Academic Partnerships 2018-2020 was held on September 20th. Within the framework of the event, the winning projects of the competition "Russia and Germany: Scientific and Educational Bridges", jointly held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were announced.

Postgraduate students of the Department of Machines and Processes of Pressure Metal Working Al-Khuzaie Ahmed Saleem Oleiwi and Al-Jumaili Mohammed Jasim Mohammed successfully defended their dissertations on topics related to the pipe rolling industry. Their research was carried out under the guidance of Professor of the Department of Machines and Processes of Pressure Metal Working, Deputy Director General for Research of the Russian Research Institute of the Tube and Pipe Industry (RosNITI), Doctor of Sciences (Engineering) Aleksandr Vydrin.
Associate Professor of the Department of International Relations, Political Science and Regional Studies at South Ural State University Maksim Gutenev took part in "The Arctic. Made in Russia" All-Russian Youth Educational Forum as a consultant working with participants in the field of Regional Studies. The Forum was held in Arkhangelsk September 6th through September 12th.
Due to a number of requests, we would like to inform all international students (unable to enter the territory of the Russian Federation due to the restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic) and their parents that the educational process will be organized with the use of distance learning technologies up until their arrival to Russia.
This year, a postgraduate track will be added to the usual program of the Open Doors International Olympiad. Winners of the Olympiad will be able to study in a Master’s degree or postgraduate programme at their chosen university free of charge. We would like to particularly note that in the postgraduate track, participants will be able to choose their future research advisors during the Olympiad and take an interview with them.
Participation in the Olympiad and subsequent studying at the winners’ chosen university will be possible in Russian and English.
