SUSU Wins a Grant to Conduct Joint Research with Partners from Kazakhstan

South Ural State University has successfully passed the competitive selection for receiving grants in the field of science for conducting joint research with organisations from the CIS and the Near Abroad countries as part of the implementation of the program of scientific and technological collaboration. Jointly with the Rudny Industrial Institute, Kazakhstan, SUSU will be working on a project on creating new composite materials for three years.

The New Composite Materials and Coatings Based on Phases with a Multicomponent Base for Use in Manufacturing, Transport Systems and the Production of Armour Elements project by SUSU received funding in the amount of 45 million roubles.

Within the frameworks of the project, it is planned to create new materials with high strength, hardness, as well as high heat resistance for their use in manufacturing (for the production of dies and metal-cutting tools, as well as for plain bearings and for the application as anti-friction coatings) and in transport (for the production of parts for jet and turbojet engines).

“The creation of new composite materials with a high level of the above-mentioned properties is planned. A specific feature of the work will be the use of solid solutions with an equimolar (or close to equimolar) ratio of three or more components as a matrix for creating new composite materials”, explains the project head Marina Samodurova. “Major part of the work will be performed at SUSU. The Rudny Industrial Institute, Republic of Kazakhstan, will act as an international partner of the project. Our colleagues from Kazakhstan will be working in areas of research in which they have extensive experience and all the necessary competencies.”

The work on obtaining the materials that scientists plan to deal with began to be conducted over the recent years. However, to date, this potentially promising area has not yet received proper development, not only in Russia, but in world science in general.

The funding will be used to purchase materials and equipment necessary for the research, as well as to pay for work of all members of the project team. OOO Avers Production and Commercial Company will act as an industrial partner of the project.

South Ural State University is a university of digital transformations, where innovative research is conducted in most of the priority fields of science and technology development. In accordance with the strategy of scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation, the university is focused on the development of big scientific interdisciplinary projects in the field of digital industry, materials science, and ecology. In 2021 SUSU became the winner in the competition under the Priority 2030 program. The university acts as a regional project office of the World-class Ural Interregional Research and Education Centre (UIREC).
