SUSU Recruits a Team of Tutors for International Students

International students, enrolling at South Ural State University in 2020, will not find themselves lost in an unknown city. A tutor will be helping each student. The process of selecting specialists, who will accompany international students and help them adapt, has started.

The representatives of 56 countries from around the world study at South Ural State University. Each year the number of international students is increasing and, for some of them, going to a different country and adapting to the new environment can be tough. To help freshmen deal with all the possible problems and assimilate faster, SUSU organized the Tutor of a SUSU International Student project three years ago. For the next academic year, a new team of tutors is being recruited.

Tutors are students who help international students in the course of studying and adaptation to new conditions. They meet freshmen at the railway station and at the airport, help to apply for migration registration, get a room in a dormitory, pass medical examination and get insurance. Tutors organize excursions around Chelyabinsk, including going to the cinema, visiting theatres and museums, hold events at the university to introduce students to each other and help international students make friends.

“The coming 2020-2021 academic year will definitely be different from the others. At the moment, we do not know when international students will have the opportunity to come to Russia and our university. Perhaps even the academic year for them will begin online. Therefore, tutoring will be slightly different. This year, we will begin to manage online communications with our applicants in advance, keep in touch with them, answer questions about the life of the university to make them feel as convenient and involved with the educational process and student life as possible,” said Valeria Chachina, specialist of the International Student Support of the SUSU International Office.

Not only Russian students, but also international students who are ready to share the experience they obtained during the years of study, can become tutors. To do so, s/he needs to fill out a special Form. The specialists of the International Office also pay attention to the experience in interacting with students and the knowledge of languages. But the most important thing, as they put it, is the desire. Several students, who find themselves in new environment, account for one tutor, so this activity is big responsibility. But at the same time, the tutor has a chance to make friends all from around the globe, get language practice and experience in establishing intercultural communications.

You can apply for tutoring till the end of June.
