Post-graduate Students and Professors of the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Computer Science Took Part in an International School for Software Engineering in Lappeenranta

At the Lappeenranta Institute of Technology the first international school in software engineering was held as part of the Erasmus+ PWs@PhD project. More than 50 post-graduates and employees from 12 universities and 6 countries took place in the school. South Ural State University was represented by a delegation from the faculty of Computational Mathematics and Computer Science: teachers Gleb Radchenko, Valentin Golodov, and Mikhail Tsymbler and post-graduate students Kirill Borodulin, Dmitriy Savchenko an Egor Savitskiy.

The school is a series of master classes from professors of universities of the consortium program Erasmus+ PWs@PhD. Participants attended courses on the abilities to correctly utilize various methods and instruments for research in the area of software engineering, methods for presenting the results of their works in the form of academic publications, and also in the research of methods of working with experimental data.

One of the highlights was the masterclass in academic writing at which Elko Nayzinikh, professor the University of Gronigen (the Netherlands) presented the specifics of writing articles for top-rated journals.

The course was held in an intensive and interactive manner” says head of the base department of Informational Technology, Mikhail Tsymbler, “We examined the issues of preparing scientific articles in English: how to structure texts, cite works, choose titles, and more. The practical assignments were completed in teams of 4-6 university representatives from different countries (Russia, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, and more) who engage in research in various fields of information technology. We had to present our results in the form of a short presentation, so we had to have a good knowledge of the English language and the ability to work in a team. All of the participants of the school from SUSU successfully completed the tasks and received certificates about the completion of the master class.”

Beyond this, the participants noted the courses of doctor Yussi Kasurinen (LTU) which were dedicated to the application of methodologies and research in the areas of computer games, and also the course by professor Alana Abrana from École de Technologie Supérieure (ETS) (University of Quebec, Canada) in methods for assessing the productivity and completion time for projects in software suite development.

The next school in the PWs@PhD project will be held in the end of August at Aalborg University (Denmark) and will be dedicated to the problem-oriented approach to education in the field of software engineering.
