A Professor from Italy Held a Lecture Series for Students of the SUSU Faculty of History

As part of the goal to develop international cooperation and knowledge exchange in the areas of research and pedagogical work, a series of lectures on the theme of “Russian History in the 20th Century” was held in the SUSU Faculty of History. The lectures were held by a professor from Tuscia University (Italy), Maria Feretti, and Doctor of Historical Sciences, Oleg Leybovich (Perm). From May 11th through May 13th, students both listened to lectures and participated in debates: within the student conference “Thawing Expectations of the Twentieth Congress”, a roundtable was created for students on the topic “Thaw in the USSR: What Was Lost and What Was Gained (mid 1950s)”

“The History of One Workman” was the title of one of Maria Feretti’s lectures. She discussed the peculiarities of life in the USSR in 20 years of the 20th century. Maria is interested in microtopics – an area of science which requires study of personal histories to expose overall tendencies in society.

“I really liked the lectures. It was especially interesting to learn about what constitutes a peoples’ historical memory, what reasons lie behind the changes of peoples’ relationship to events of the beginning of the 20th century, and also about how people in Italy comprehend history,” shared Eduard Meyer, student of group I-406.

“I wanted to discuss that in particular, because the microlevel is the main level upon which we can restore history,” says Maria, “it gives us a chance to see all of the contradictions of society in peoples’ actions.”

In one of her presentations, the guest mentioned that she would be happy to return to the south Ural region.
