3 Students of Computational Mathematics and Computer Science Enrolled in a Double Masters’ Program with LTU

On April 8th, 2014, an academic partnership contract was signed between South Ural State University и Lappenranta Technological University (Finland). Three masters’ students of the SUSU Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Computer Science (CMCS) will be going to study in Finland in a double diploma program.

In accordance with the contract, master’s students of CMCS who demonstrate their abilities in education and who have a sufficient level of English can enroll in the double masters' degree program and go to LTU for their second year of education. If they do so they are assigned a research advisor in both universities. Upon completion of the program, students receive two international diplomas: SUSU and LTU.

Each of the masters’ students have already chosen the topic of work upon which they will be going to LTU to study. We asked them to tell us their expectations for education in Finland.

Ekaterina Nepovinnykh, CMCS-117;

– Yekaterina, tell us please, what are you working on now?

 My thesis topic is “Methods of Resource Planning in Distributed Problem-Oriented Cloud Environments”. To successfully manage resources in cloud-based systems, there must be a method to forecast the time needed to solve computational tasks and a method of planning task distribution across computational nodes. My task is to enable the assessment of these characteristics with consideration of problem-oriented specifics of a cloud-based computational environment and develop algorithms for planning based on these assessments.

– What do you expect from participation in a dual masters’ program?
 I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, it is amazing to have the changes to study free of cost in one of the best universities of Europe and to live in a country like Finland. On the other hand, of course, it is a little frightening. I will have to be apart from my family and friends for a full year. Overall, from this trip I am looking forward to new knowledge, meeting interesting people, and participating in exciting projects.

Igor Sukhinskiy, CMCS-117:

– Igor, tell us about what you’re working on at the moment.

At the moment I’m working on developing a system to analyze the tracking of changes in a display. Using such a system allows, for example, for monitoring of the level of activity of a parking lot using analysis of the picture from a video surveillance system. This allows drivers to get real-time information about where they can find the nearest parking spot, what is the parking situation on a given street, and also enables the analysis and forecasting of the level of activity in parking areas.

Fyodor Turbabin, CMCS-117:

– Fyodor, how did you find out about the dual degree program?
 I learned about the possibility of participating in a dual degree program a few months before enrolling in my masters’ program at SUSU. This possibility was an important factor in choosing the CMCS masters’ program. Right after enrollment I worked towards that goal. I prepared for the TOEFL, gathered and filled out the necessary documents for enrollment. When I learned that I had achieved this goal I had set, I was, of course, very happy.

– What do you expect from this program?
 I expect interesting communication and partnership with people from different countries during study at LTU, and also the chance to gain new experience.

– What task are you working on solving at the moment?
 My thesis topic is “The use of deep learning for facial recognition”. I made this choice due to the new wave of interest in neural networks, which in the last few years have shown themselves as a method for computer-assisted learning with the best results in the area of computer vision. Also of interest is some evidence about the similarities of the mechanisms of work of a human brain and deep learning models in visual signal processing. The use of such methods for facial recognition open a wide range of possible applications, from security systems to interactive video work.

The faculty of Computational Mathematics and Computer Science wishes luck to masters’ students of the dual degree program in both their education and their research, as well as a successful thesis defense and successful completion of degrees at SUSU and LTU. The faculty invites all students to study in its master’s program and enroll in the dual degree program with LTU!
