At SUSU Physics and Metallurgy Faculty the Regional Competition of professional skills "Young Welder 2013" for the school students of 7-10th grades was held. The Competition was devoted to the 70th Anniversary of SUSU.
Physics and Metallurgy Faculty held the competition in the leading laboratory of Department of Welding Engineering Equipment and Technologies. The competition objective is to identify the talented school students, support and grant them and also to form the motivation among young people to the creative and professional growth and to the well-informed choice of their future career.
January 26 the guys from Chelyabinsk and Kopeysk schools came to participate in the competition "Young Welder 2013" the organizer of which was Physics and Metallurgical Faculty. The peculiarity of that competition was that the school students who took part in the event did not have any initial professional education but they were ready to connect their lives with technical specialities, in particular with welding. During the competition the school children got acquainted with with the term "White Metallurgy", saw some videos about Physics and Metallurgy Faculty and the leading enterprises of the region.
The competition itself was carried out with the help of the latest and absolutely safe training equipment developed by SUSU scientific and production Institute "Training Equipment and Technologies" and Electric Welding Institute named after Paton. The training equipment allowed to estimate the welding parameters and determine those students who managed to perform the given mode more accurately. In whole 32 school students took part in that competition.
At the first stage the guys using a special holder with movable electrode performed a weld on the sensor screen. At the second stage which was more complicated the school students with the help of low-current ark with nonconsumable electrode did the welding taking into account the firmly fixed mode parameters.
The following criteria were estimated: correspondence to the given welding modes, evenness of carrying the electrode with the given speed preserving the optimum interval of arcing height and inclination of the electrode in relation to the weld. All the parameters were fixed by computer and it allowed to determine the winner who more accurately performed the given welding mode thus in the future he could do the welding of real parts without defects.
The competition is developing and this year it possesses the status of regional competition and is held among Chelyabinsk school students of 7-11th grades. The organizers plan to add the theoretical stage where it will be necessary to demonstrate the knowledge of welding history.
In the Regional Competition of professional skills "Young Welder 2013", devoted to the 70th Anniversary of SUSU, Chelyabinsk schools No.13, 41, 52, 137, 138 and Kopeysk school No.44 took part. The winners got diplomas and valuable gifts. The first place was taken by Sergey Karlyshev, student of school No.13, the second place - Davlatmand Chuponov from school No.137 and the third place - Nikita Antropov from school No.13.
Summing up the results the high level of competition organization should be mentioned. SUSU Physics and Metallurgy Faculty received a lot of responses from different districts of Chelyabinsk and Chelyabinsk region thus the image of SUSU, Physics and Metallurgy Faculty and, particularly, Department of Welding Engineering Equipment and Technologies became more prestigeous.
