Do you wish to study somewhere where your intelligence, ambitions and desire to move forward are truly valued? The SUSU Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics is a place where students do not just attend lectures, but work on scientific discoveries, participate in international projects and launch their startups even before graduation.
The Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of South Ural State University is a scientific and educational centre where fundamental knowledge in physics, chemistry, mathematics and IT meets advanced technologies, international research and project work. Here, students from their first years of studies are involved in real projects and learn to apply their knowledge in life.
Students of the Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics obtain not only a deep theoretical background, but also practical skills that open up the way to a variety of areas: from programming and analytics to ecology and quantum electronics. This is where future specialists in the field of artificial intelligence, business analytics, web developers, researchers, environmental engineers and developers of high-tech solutions are born.
Powerful science begins from the first year of studies
Already from their freshman years, students of the Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics participate in Olympiads in mathematics, physics, chemistry and competitive programming. Preparation for such contests is organised with practicing teachers, and victories at the all-Russian and international levels bring not only prestige, but also the opportunity to receive increased scholarships. Moreover, SUSU finances the participation of students in international contests and conferences.
The institute is actively developing international scientific cooperation. Students are involved in work in the laboratories of the Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and SUSU:
-
Laboratory for Computer Vision of Robotic Systems in Industry;
-
Quantum Engineering of Light Laboratory;
-
Laboratory for Molecular Electronics;
-
Nanotechnology Research and Education Centre;
-
Ekoanalitika Research Equipment Sharing Centre;
-
Laboratory for Multiscale Modelling;
-
Youth Laboratory of Electromechanical, Electronic and Electrochemical Systems;
-
Physical Research Laboratory.
Students actively publish the results of their work in highly ranked journals.
Modern programmes, real prospects
In the 2025/2026 academic year, the Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics offers a wide range of popular areas of study providing an impressive number of state-funded places:
-
01.03.02 Applied Mathematics and Computer Science – 55 places;
-
01.03.03 Mechanics and Mathematical Modelling – 20 places;
-
02.03.02 Fundamental Computer Science and Information Technologies– 40 places;
-
03.03.01 Applied Mathematics and Physics – 15 places;
-
11.03.04 Electronics and Nanoelectronics – 20 places;
-
04.03.01 Chemistry – 25 places;
-
18.03.01 Chemical Engineering – 20 places;
-
05.03.06 Ecology and Use of Natural Resources – 15 places.
Each programme combines deep theoretical training with an emphasis on practical application.
Technologies, support and strong teaching abilities
The Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics is rightfully considered to be one of the most technically equipped institutes of SUSU. Students work with modern laboratory facilities, master professional equipment and gain experience that is valued in any industry. The teaching staff is represented by highly qualified professors, associate professors and young specialists who do not just give lectures, but work together with students on real cases and research.
It is important to note: here we do not teach “by the textbook”. Courses are regularly updated, teachers monitor scientific trends and constantly develop their methods.
Employers queue up for graduates
One of the key advantages of the Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics is its close interaction with industry. Each department of the Institute has direct partners among employers. Already in their senior years, students can take internships and even officially find employment. Companies meet students halfway, providing a flexible schedule, and as a result, they receive qualified specialists “tailored” to their tasks.
AI projects and digital future
The Institute is especially proud of the “VirtUm” Centre for Top-level Academic Programmes in the Field of Artificial Intelligence, created in 2025 with the support of the Analytical Centre under the Government of the Russian Federation within the framework of the “Artificial Intelligence” Federal Project of the “Data Economy and Digital Transformation of the State” National Project. More than 150 students will begin their studies in September enrolling in the following programmes:
01.03.02 Applied Mathematics and Computer Science;
02.03.02 Fundamental Computer Science and Information Technologies;
09.03.03 Applied Computer Science;
09.03.04 Software Engineering.
With the support of industrial partners, such as Sber, 3DiVi, StandUp Innovations and iTerritory, students will team up to work on real projects and develop complex solutions at the intersection of technology and science.
VirtUm means relevant knowledge, creative tasks, and international career prospects. VirtUm creates the intelligence of the future!
Life outside lectures: creativity, sports, volunteering
The Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics is not only about science and studying. From their first years, students are involved in vibrant and eventful extracurricular life: holidays, festivals, contests.
The Institute organizes annual contests: PrimeTime individual and team programming championship, as well as an open team Olympiad in mathematics. Mathematical battles, contests and Olympiads unite students into a powerful professional community.
For non-resident students, dormitories become not just a place to live at, but an entry point into the student community. Annual cooking master classes, sports contests, festivities with the participation of teachers and the director of the institute are held.
Volunteering, construction teams, creative teams of SUSU - each student can find something to their taste and gain not only experience, but also the opportunity to apply for increased scholarships and grants.
