“Scientific Tandem” Solemn Welcome Ceremony: Chelyabinsk Region Acknowledges its Best Young Scientists

On June 20th, the annual “Scientific Tandem” Solemn Welcome Ceremony was held in Chelyabinsk, where the best postgraduate students and their scientific supervisors were honoured. It is symbolic that the event was held in the year of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the postgraduate institute in Russia.

The welcome ceremony is being held for the third year in a row within the framework of the implementation of the Action Plan of the Decade of Science and Technology in the Russian Federation in the Chelyabinsk Region. This year, it has brought together 16 of the most promising postgraduate students and 17 of their scientific supervisors from 9 leading universities and scientific organizations in our region.

The following participants from South Ural State University were awarded: postgraduate student Olga Borodina; scientific adviser, Doctor of Sciences (Chemistry), Head of the Research Laboratory of Multiscale Modelling of Multicomponent Functional Materials Ekaterina Bartashevich; postgraduate student Andrey Lisov; scientific adviser, Doctor of Sciences (Engineering), Professor of the Department of Automobile Transport Aleksandr Vozmilov.

The official ceremony was opened by the First Deputy Governor of the Chelyabinsk Region Stanislav Mosharov. In his welcoming speech he noted:

"The Chelyabinsk Region is rightfully considered to be one of the leading scientific centres in our country. Our universities and scientific organizations train specialists of the highest class, and it is especially important that our young scientists work on projects that have practical significance for our region's economy. Postgraduate studies are the most important stage in the development of a scientist, and we pay special attention to supporting young researchers."

In his speech, the First Deputy Governor of our region spoke in detail about the measures to support scientific activities:

✔Allocation of grants in cooperation with the Russian Science Foundation

✔Social programs, including payments for the purchase of housing

✔Creation of youth laboratories

✔Construction of a world-class inter-university campus, which is being carried out within the framework of the "Youth and Children" national project.

"The regional government, headed by Alexey Texler, pays special attention to the development of scientific potential," noted the First Deputy Governor. "We understand that the success of our young scientists today ensures the technological sovereignty of our country tomorrow."

The scientific potential of our region is confirmed by many indicators − currently 16025 people are engaged in research and development. The share of postgraduate students is a stable 8% of the total number of researchers. Over the past three years, the number of research staff has increased by 708 people.

Closing the ceremony, Stanislav Mosharov expressed gratitude to the scientific advisers for their contribution to the training of personnel and wished the postgraduate students further professional and scientific growth.
