"Customs Gives the Go-Ahead": Russia Celebrates Customs Service Veterans' Day

The Federal Customs Service of Russia makes a worthy contribution to strengthening the economic security and protecting the national interests of our country. Today, the customs service is rightfully the most effective mechanism for state regulation of foreign trade, replenishment of the revenue side of the federal budget and compliance with foreign trade legislation. Evgeny Stepanov, Head of the Department of Customs Affairs at the SUSU School of Economics and Management, speaks about the specifics of the customs officer's profession and the department's work.

– What qualities, in your opinion, should customs officers have?

– Since customs officers play an important role in ensuring the security and efficient functioning of our country’s borders, they must be well-rounded professionals with a wide range of knowledge and skills. It is important that they have excellent knowledge of mathematics and other general education subjects, and must also have good physical fitness. Of course, customs officers must also have specialized knowledge in the field of customs and foreign economic activity.

– How is the educational process conducted at your department?

– In addition to theoretical aspects, the department’s teachers conduct field classes at customs posts, for example, the Chelyabinsk customs post, the customs post of the Balandino airport, and others. There, students can study in more detail all forms of customs control, and customs post employees hold master classes, showing students how to properly perform, for example, customs inspection of individuals, goods and vehicles.

– Where can graduates of the department work?

– After students complete their 5-year training, they receive a higher education diploma and then undergo a competition and interviews to enter the customs service. Most of our graduates are employed in the customs services of the Chelyabinsk Region and the Ural region.

– What would you like to wish to students and colleagues on their professional holiday?

– I congratulate all employees of the Chelyabinsk customs, students, graduates and teachers of the Department of Customs Affairs on this wonderful day. Employees of the customs authorities of the Chelyabinsk Region not only carry out their service responsibly, but also help our university in training highly qualified personnel in this field. I wish everyone involved in this holiday good luck, professional development and good health!
