A SUSU Student from Tajikistan Studies History

South Ural State University (SUSU) is a huge (more than 20,000 students) multinational university which has been consistently ranked as one of the top Russian universities in national and international rankings. The university is multinational and nowadays is a home for more than 2,000 international students from 54 countries. Every year students from different countries choose SUSU for getting their Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.

Husrav Gandzhov came from Tajikistan to get his education at the Institute of Media, Social Sciences and Humanities. He agrees to answer our questions about living in another country and shares his impressions about South Ural State University.

- Tell us some words about your native city.

- I was born in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. It is an ancient city which was a center of trade earlier. The name of the city is translated as  Monday in Russian. We consider our city to be the heart of Tajikistan.

- How long have you been in Russia?

- I have been here in Russia for 5 years and it wasn’t difficult to get here. As the country for me is a second homeland and travel to Russia is visa free, no wonder I came here to get education.

- Did you know Russian language before coming here?

- Yes, I know Russian quite well because 90% of the Tajik people can speak Russian. It is the second language in Tajikistan, that’s why for me it was no difficulty to start my classes at SUSU in Russian.

- Why did you choose your future profession?

- I got my Bachelor’s degree in the field of Regional Studies and at the moment I am getting my Master’s degree in History. From my childhood I was keen on history. And I really believe that everybody should know the history of his country, historical heroes and main historical events.

- What are your reasons for choosing Chelyabinsk and South Ural State University?

- My elder brother graduated from SUSU and it was him who advised me to apply here. I collected all the necessary documents, got interviewed, and passed the exams in early July. Frankly speaking I wasn’t sure I could do it because the last exam was English. That moment  I didn’t speak English very well. A couple of weeks later, I got an email with the invitation to the university. The first thing I did after coming to Chelyabinsk was my visit to the Immigration Services Office where I got all the necessary documents.

- Were there any challenges while studying?

- At first, it was hard to find a classroom in such a big university. When I just started my study, my groupmates told me the class would be in the Laboratory Building. I was going around the main building of the university trying to find a laboratory classroom. When I realised my mistake the class was already over. Every year when I see the freshmen looking for the necessary classroom, I recollect the moment and smile.

I want to give some advice to freshmen - don’t miss classes! Then you will pass all the exams and sessions without any troubles.

- Can you tell us where you’ll be in five years?

- Let it be a secret and in five years we’ll talk about it again.
