Applicant 2021. Master's Programme in Philology: Academic Knowledge and Digital Technologies

For more than 20 years, the Department of Russian Language and Literature of South Ural State University has been providing training in Philology.

Philological education is traditionally considered to be a basic one. It fosters a strong personal culture and provides a wide range of professional opportunities. Mastering the philological programme, students obtain the linguistic and socio-cultural communication skills, get prepared for creative professional activities in academic teams, in the institutions of education, culture, management, media and all those involved in the organization of social and humanitarian activities.

The Department of Russian Language and Literature of the SUSU Institute of Media, Social Sciences and Humanities invites you to enrol in the Master's degree programme 45.04.01 Philology with the specialization in Text Composition, Analysis and Expertise.

The duration of training for a Master's degree (full-time on a state-funded /contractual basis) is two years. During this time, students study languages (Russian and foreign) in their theoretical and practical application, fiction in historical and theoretical aspects, learn to compose various types of texts (written, oral, virtual, including hypertexts and text elements of multimedia objects).

Having a special license, associate professors of the department teach Master's degree students the fundamentals of such an in-demand activity today as linguistic examination.

Master's degree is the second stage of the educational trajectory. The importance of obtaining it is explained by the need to transform the theoretical knowledge gained in a Bachelor's degree programme into practical professional competencies.

For this reason, the Department of Russian Language and Literature implements the Master's degree programme using such teaching technique as project-based learning. Master's degree students are creating a website called Virtual Museum of South Ural Writers, which will fully replace the literature museum that is absent in our region. Thus, the Master's degree students of the department not only receive a higher philological education, but create an important, socially significant regional project.

A second-year Master's degree student Viktoriia Stepanova says:

"Studying in the Master's degree programme allowed me to gain important experience in teamwork. I gained new knowledge and skills: I learned to work in Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, create Google maps, work in computer programs with modern digital technologies, learned about the Ural writers, whom I had not heard of before, and learned about the peculiarities of the work of literary critics."

Working on the web-site, the Master's degree students of the department not only hone their philological skills, write biographical content and literary essays, but also receive knowledge that is relevant in the current digital era.

Philology is a science that is not lost in the centuries-old history of civilization, because it has always been able to flexibly adapt to the requirements of the time. Today, such a field as Digital Philology is actively developing, where the text is studied using special computer programs, artificial intelligence methods. Such studies are carried out at the Laboratory of Digital Philology created at the SUSU Department of Russian Language and Literature.

Master's degree students majoring in Philology study such disciplines as Information Technology, Internet Text Workshop, and Multimedia Technologies in Applied Philology. Under the guidance of Candidate of Sciences (Philology), Associate Professor Evgenii Smyshliaev, students learn various methods of computer text processing, data visualization and network analysis of texts.

"In our classes, using modern GIS technologies, we analyze the relationship of literary texts with the space of the region. The result of this work are publications in world scientific journals. Also, an important element of training is the acquisition of some design competencies by students: skills in photo processing and retouching, creating logos in Adobe Illustrator, and visual design of content for social networks," says Evgenii Smyshliaev.

The uniqueness of philological education at SUSU lies in the practice-oriented approach. After completing the Master's degree programme, students enter the profession not only with theoretical knowledge, but also with practical skills in applying philological knowledge in the broadest spheres − from teaching to legal ones (the latter includes forensic linguistic expertise).

To consolidate practical skills, students undergo practical training in various organisations of the city (Uralpressinform Information Agency, Editorial Office of the Chelyabinsk Trubnik newspaper, OOO Special Events, Regional Television of the Chelyabinsk Region State Enterprise,OOO Radio Continental, Traktor Hockey Club Chelyabinsk City Public Organisation, PAO Chelyabinsk Iron and Steel Works, PJSC Sberbank, OOO Studio of Internet Technologies, OOO Arkaim Publishing House, South Ural Chamber of Commerce and Industry, United National Archive of the Chelyabinsk Region, ZAO Tsitsero, etc).

Upon completion of the Master's degree programme, the alumni have the opportunity to take postgraduate courses on a state-funded basis (10.01.01 Russian Literature) with the right to teach at the university in the future.

For admission to the Master's degree programme with the specialization in Text Composition, Analysis and Expertise, applicants must pass a comprehensive exam, during which several types of skills and abilities are tested. Exam tickets consist of a written assignment to edit and analyze a text, and an oral commentary on the completed assignment.
