From Physics to Lyrics, or How to Turn a Manual into a Fairy Tale

The Department of International Relations, Political Science and Regional Studies of South Ural State University invites to participate in the “Music of Translation” contest.

This contest aims at improving the knowledge and skills of students, as well as the quality of training qualified specialists, along with stimulating the interest of students to the process of learning and to their future profession, forming and developing their competence as translators. Students over 16 years of age, both those learning English as an elective discipline, and those majoring in linguistics can take part in the contest.

The participants will be offered to perform translation of a technical manual while at the same time changing the genre and style of the text. This will not be a mere translation task! It will require an original approach from you, and your using of your imagination and creativity. The essence of the challenge is that the participants will have to change the manual in such a way that it reads like a fiction story (novel, fairy tale, fable, etc.), or a publicistic writing, or a scientific article. The choice is yours!

Determining the genre- and style-related specifics of the source text and the text of translation is the main task of every translator. This year, the challenge has been made more difficult as translators will have to not only determine the genre and analyse the stylistic peculiarities of the text, but also make a decision on how to change its genre. Translations will be accepted at studiumjuvenis[at]mail[dot]ru till December 27, 2020 and will need to be accompanied by a letter indicating the participant’s full name, city, university, faculty, year of study, major (specialization), and contacting e-mail; the subject of the letter must be the “Translation contest”. You can read the contest text in the Appendix No.1 to the Provision on Holding the “Music of Translation” Contest.
