SUSU Postgraduate Became a Priz-Winner of the Weldex/Rossvarka 2019 Exhibition

The 19th International Exhibition of Welding Materials, Equipment and Technologies Weldex/Rossvarka 2019 was held in Moscow. A postgraduate student of South Ural State University took first place in one of the engineering categories.

At present, the Weldex/Rossvarka 2019 exhibition is the biggest specialized welding exhibition in Russia, in the former Soviet Union (USSR) countries, as well as one of the biggest welding exhibitions in Europe and in the world.

"Participation in such competitions and exhibitions enables young scientists (postgraduate students) in the field of welding production to make new contacts with enterprises, show their achievements to the world community, and also find investors for their future projects," comments the Head of the SUSU Department of Welding Engineering Mikhail Ivanov.

In order to create favourable conditions for the exhibition visitors and give them the most sufficient insight into advanced welding technologies, new types of equipment and materials, a heavy business program was implemented at the exhibition: master classes by the best domestic and foreign manufacturers, conferences, seminars, meetings, as well as three contests:

  1. Best Professional Welder 2019 Awards (for adult professional welders), and Best Young Welder 2019 Awards (for students);
  2. Best Welding Engineer (Technologist, Research Scientist) 2019 Awards (for employees of scientific and industrial organisations);
  3. Miss WELDING of the World 2019 Awards (online contest).

Nikita Vdonin, 1st-year postgraduate student of the Faculty of Materials Science and Metallurgy Engineering of the SUSU Institute of Engineering and Technology, became the winner in the contest category of the Best Welding Research Scientist 2019.

"I have my Master's research paper. So, I revised this paper, made necessary changes and improved it to fit the format of the contest, and submitted to the jury. The theme was Multi-arc Welding Technology with Shortened Periods of Overheating of the Heat-Affected Zone. At the first stage, I needed to send a short essay on the paper, as well as the necessary graphs and tables. After a while, I received a letter and found out about my victory. I flew to Moscow to the exhibition, where I was awarded a diploma and presented with an industrial welding machine. I am pleased with the result. Everything was very interesting," said Ivan.

The postgraduate is working as a welding engineer at the Chelyabinsk Iron and Steel Works. Such contests allow to get more skills in the profession. According to Nikita, he will definitely take part in the next contest.

It should be noted that the exhibition was organized b y ITE Group with the assistance of the Russian Scientific and Technical Welding Society, the Moscow Intersectoral Alliance of Chief Welders, and ELSVAR company. The event was supported by the Ministry of Industry, Science and Technology of the Russian Federation, Moscow Region Government and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation.
