Spring and Labour Day: Over 300 SUSU Students Took Part in the May Day Demonstration

South Ural State University took part in the demonstration as part of the celebrations under Spring and Labour Day (or International Workers’ Day). More than 300 SUSU students marched in a column along Lenina Prospect and other streets of Chelyabinsk.

May 1st is an important historical date in many countries. The holiday’s history dates back to the year of 1886, when on the same day American workers organized a strike in Chicago and demanded for an 8-hour working day. In Russia, May 1st was first celebrated in 1890 and was called International Workers’ Day. Today, this holiday is celebrated in 142 countries and territories around the world. In Russia, peaceful gatherings and holiday festivities are held, which unite the whole of our country.

On this day in Chelyabinsk rallies were organized with the participation of public organisations and enterprises of our city. Traditionally, SUSU organized a much of a student column along Lenina Prospect. Students gathered on the square in front of the SUSU’s main building and marched towards Revolution Square while holding banners and shouting out slogans devoted to the university.

“The May Day demonstration is one of the most colourful events in the Spring and Labour Day celebrations. I’d like to say big thanks to our team, as all guys showed positive vibes, unity of our university, our youth and our city on this day. I believe it’s really important to keep on participating in such events in order to prove the power, energy and enthusiasm of our university’s youth,” shares Chairman of the SUSU United Student Council Viktor Froidenberger.

On Revolution Square students joined the traditional city-wide march, and together with other citizens went to Theatre Square, where the main rally was held with the participation of the representatives of our city’s various organisations and enterprises.

The gatherings were held in several places around the city: besides Revolution Square, the citizens of Chelyabinsk could participate in the demonstrations on Theatre Square, Yaroslavskogo Square, A.S. Pushkin city garden, and nearby the I.V. Kurchatov’s monument. The demonstrations held on the occasion of Spring and Labour Day united 20 thousand citizens.
