The World of South Urals as Seen by SUSU International Students

The nature of South Urals is famous for its beauty and diversity. Lakes and mountains of the Chelyabinsk Region spark interest of not only Russians, but also among foreigners. The SUSU Center for Sociocultural Adaptation helps students from other countries discover the most favourite recreation spots of the residents of South Urals.

Recreation outdoors is part of the adaptation for international students. During excursions and trips they not only learn new things about South Urals, but also practice their Russian when communicating with the SUSU volunteers.

“Studying in a foreign country often feels difficult for international students, that is why we need to provide them with an opportunity to do something different and recharge their batteries. All the events are organized during weekends or vacations so that they didn’t have any problems with studying,” shares Head of the Center for Sociocultural Adaptation Dina Valeeva.

In winter SUSU’s international students rest at Sunny Valley mountain ski resort. Here they go mountain skiing and snowboarding led by coaches. Also, two or three times a season they go tubing to Lazurny settlement.

During the warm season international students together with the volunteers go on trips to the lakes of South Urals: Turgoyak, which is also nicknamed “Baikal’s Younger Brother”; Arakul; Bolshoy Sunukul; and others. Moreover, over the last year international students took trips to the Kaoline quarry, climbed mountain Sugomak and Arakulsky Shikhan rocks.

“I like the lakes, woods and mountains of South Urals. My friends and I go on outdoor trips every week. We often travel to picturesque sites near Miass, Zlatoust, and Kyshtym. Nature is always beautiful here. I advise everyone to come here and see it with their own eyes,” shares his impressions a student from Sri Lanka Uvindu Wijeweera.

Besides travel excursions and trips, the SUSU Association of International Students holds events in parks and garden squares of Chelyabinsk. Outdoor picnics and Conversation Club meetings are organized for foreigners. They hang out at celebrations, such as Maslenitsa festival, and enjoy participating in various master classes.
