Conversation Club for International Students Opens at the Center of Sociocultural Adaptation

The first informal meeting of the conversation club for international students was held on February 17th. The students discussed the interesting and important topic of love alongside Center staff and volunteers.

The conversation club is an ideal place for friendly discussion. For foreign students who have not been in Russia very long, this is also an excellent chance to develop their conversation skills in Russian. Why is this so important? When learning a new language, the development of conversational skills requires special attention. Unlike other skills, it is impossible to master this skill with the help of books alone, so foreign students who may know grammar well are not always able to freely chat in Russian. This problem doesn’t arise because they don’t want to speak, sometimes they just can’t find a speaking partner among native speakers.

In the Center of Sociocultural Adaptation’s conversation club, all the dialogs are held in Russian; staff and volunteers of the Center help the participants chat and guide the conversation in the right direction. They also make sure that the club’s guests don’t change to their native language and don’t make big errors. Meetings in the conversation club are held in small groups of 10 people so that all guests feel comfortable, completely express themselves, and matched the group’s conversation level. The topic for the next meeting is – “The hero of our time – who is he?”
