SUSU’s Improved Publication Activity Indicators Noted at the XIX Seminar and Conference for Project 5-100

As part of the XIX seminar and conference 5-100 in Samara, in which a SUSU delegation participated, special attention was paid to the growth of 5-100 universities’ publication activity for the last period of entry into the academic excellence program.

According to the preliminary results for scientometric indicators, SUSU improved its publication activity indicators in 2016. At this time, the university is located in the top three for publication grown among the group of 5-100 universities who demonstrated a fast pace in 2016. Also noted in this group with high results: Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University “LETI” and Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN).

The most significant contribution to the improval of scientometric indicators came from SUSU researchers with the largest number of publications for 2016 that were indexed in Web of Science. In total, the number of publications in journals included in Web of Science more than doubled to 268 (110 in 2015).

The largest number of Web of Science publications from 2012 to 2016 came from Vladimir Sharutin and Olga Sharutina. For the 2012-2016 period, Vladimir Viktorovich published 59 articles indexed in Web of Science, cited 34 times. In this same period, 53 publications by O.K. Sharutina were indexed in the Web of Science database and were cited 28 times. The leader for number of cited articles in Web of Science for 2012-2016 was senior research member of the Faculty of Materials Science and Material Physiochemistry, Dmitriy Zherebtsov. His articles, dedicated to the study of ferromagnetic monocrystals and carbonic nano-materials were cited 72 times in the noted period. The number of articles indexed in the Scopus database grew significantly to 467 (245 in 2016)

The biggest successes in publication activities were achieved by: A.V. Epimakhov, S.P. Maslennikova, I.V. Krivtsov, S.A. Gudkova, A.S. Maklakov, M.V. Ilkayeva, E.V. Bartashevich, V.V. Avdin, I.D. Yushina, E.A. Vershinina, D.A. Zherebtsov, V.S. Senchurin, D.G. Kim, A.M. Kostryukova, T.G. Krupnova, I.V. Mashkova, V.R. Gasirov, D.A. Mirzayev. Their articles were the most cited, which means they are the most in-demand for the scientific world.

Thanks to these researchers, SUSU’ indicators in the Web of Science international database grew by 50%. According to Nadezhda Polikhina, author of the report “Dynamics of scientometric indicators for Project 5-100 participant universities,” expert at the Sociocenter federal state unitary scientific enterprise, these rates of growth can be considered quite high for a university in the second wave of Program 5-100 universities which joined relatively recently.

In the 5-100 seminar and conference in Samara, the SUSU vice rector of strategic development Andrey Keller and head of the office of partnership with ratings organizations Darya Ivleva discussed the prospects of SUSU entering the internationally-renowned Times Higher Education ratings in a meeting with an expert from THE, Michael Karwan. According to the THE expert, SUSU has the necessary potential to enter the ratings and successfully advance within it. The meeting also included discussion about the prospects of SUSU working with the THE ratings agency and the signing of a contract for analytical services.
