First Year of Studies as a Start of Adult Life: Freshmen of the School of Economics and Management Share Their Emotions

The life of a first-year student means new impressions, freedom and the first adult challenges. Yesterday's schoolchildren suddenly find themselves in a different world: lectures instead of lessons, strict deadlines instead of the usual homework, and a mentor who will not remind you about unsubmitted work as a class teacher did.

Behind the overall romance of student life lies the first challenge of independence. You need to learn to combine studies, a part-time job (if you have one) and your personal life. The first session becomes a serious test not only of knowledge, but also of stress resistance. But it is in this year that many find lifelong friends, learn to make decisions and understand what they want their future to be. The main thing is not to be afraid.

Our first-year students share their impressions of the beginning of their professional path at the School of Economics and Management (SEM).

Dariia Znaiko, 38.03.02 Management (Bachelor’s degree):

"I am a student at the School of Economics and Management majoring in Management. Studying at SEM is about development, ambitions, and cool people around you. Here you really feel like you are part of a large, lively, and smart community. The teachers don't just give lectures, they also inspire, share their experience, and maintain interest in the work. There are a lot of practice, projects, and opportunities: from internships to participation in conferences and competitions. You are constantly on the move, with new ideas and challenges. The School of Economics and Management helps you not only improve your knowledge, but also understand who you want to be and how to achieve it."

Kirill Chikunov and Makar Matsakov, 38.03.05 Business Informatics (Bachelor's degree):

"We are now second-year students majoring in Business Informatics. When we enrolled in SUSU, we couldn't even imagine how interesting and diverse student life is. The main thing is not to be lazy and use the opportunities that the university provides. SUSU is a wonderful place where we can realize our talents by participating in exciting hackathons and prestigious all-Russian competitions, develop our creative abilities, that is, become part of a friendly team of talented and energetic students together with experienced professional teachers! If you ask what advice we would give to new first-year students, it would be the following: don't be afraid to ask teachers questions; participate in events – this helps find friends and useful connections; master time management from the very first days, there is no way around it."

Vladimir Polokhin, 38.05.01 Economic Security (Specialist degree):

"I am a SUSU student who completed the first year of the Economic Security programme. A year ago, I chose South Ural State University — and I have never regretted it! Here, not only interesting studies with professional teachers awaited me, but also an entertaining and eventful student life, in which I actively participate. The School of Economics and Management is a place where you will find a friendly team of like-minded people, uncover your potential and get opportunities for growth. Here, everyone can express themselves, be it science, creativity, sports or social activities."

Gor Kirakosian, 38.03.04 State and Municipal Administration (Bachelor's degree):

"My name is Gor Kirakosian, I completed my first year at SEM in the field of State and Municipal Administration. I have never regretted that I entered here, because you can realize yourself in all areas at our School: scientific, social, and professional. Every year, our students of all years actively participate in conferences, meetings with leading specialists in municipal management, where they adopt the most relevant work experience. I would also like to mention about the teaching staff, it consists not only of theorists, but also of practitioners. Our faculty also actively involves students in practical activities, which are aimed at developing the skills necessary for future activities. If you want to get a sought-after profession, develop leadership qualities and be at the centre of student life, SEM will be an excellent choice!"

Mark Subbotin, 38.03.01 Economics (Bachelor's degree):

"Studying at the SUSU School of Economics and Management leaves a positive impression. The teachers are competent specialists who not only provide theoretical knowledge, but also share practical experience. I am especially pleased that much attention is paid to real cases and teamwork: this helps better understand how to apply knowledge in practice. The educational process is organized quite flexibly. There is an opportunity to participate in internships and projects. It is also important that the university has a good educational infrastructure and a developed student life. Studying is not easy, but interesting − and it is worth it."

Artem Sokolov, 38.03.02 Management (Bachelor's degree)

"I am a second-year student at the SUSU School of Economics and Management majoring in Management. Studying at SUSU has become not just an important stage in my life, but a real time of growth, development and self-realization. The teachers are real professionals who know how to not only give lectures, but also engage, excite interest and inspire. The School provides a lot of opportunities to prove yourself, find like-minded people and make real friends. I am proud to be part of this large and ambitious team. Studying at SEM is not only about knowledge, but also about people, about the atmosphere, about the path that helps you become who you want to be."

Denis Neustroev, 38.03.04 State and Municipal Management (Bachelor’s degree):

"I am studying in the State and Municipal Administration specialty and I made this choice consciously. Since childhood, I have been interested in management activities and public service. I chose the SUSU School of Economics and Management, because I believe that it is here that you can get fundamental knowledge in my field, while simultaneously developing in extracurricular activities. And the first year of studies here confirmed this."

Aleksandr Pushkarev, 38.05.02 Customs Affairs (Specialist degree):

"One year ago, I chose the Customs Affairs specialty at SEM and have never regretted this decision! But SEM gave me much more than just a stock of knowledge. Over this year, my student life has turned into a kaleidoscope of bright events: creative, intellectual, and sports competitions. Here I found true friendship, incredible emotions, and firm confidence in the future. Every day I am convinced that this was my best choice! After all, customs is not a "dull civil service", but a mix of law, economics, and a bit of detective stories. At first, I thought it was boring...I couldn't be more wrong about it."
