International Students of SUSU Spend Summer Holidays at “Olimp” Camp

For international students of South Ural State University (SUSU), summer is not just a time for relaxation but also an opportunity to immerse themselves in Russian culture and traditions while practicing their Russian language skills. They are happily doing all of this at the “Olimp” student camp.

This year, more than 20 international students from different countries are taking part in the session. All of them are enrolled in various programs at SUSU.

“This is already our seventh trip to “Olimp” with international students – it’s a wonderful summer tradition for us. We participate in the camp’s activities and also organize our own events specifically for the students. They swim, play on the beach, take part in language and sports games, sing with a guitar, socialize, and simply have a great time. For many, this is their first camp experience – and as they say, they loved it,” shared Dina Valeeva, Head of SUSU’s  Center for Sociocultural Adaptation.

The “Olimp” student recreation camp is a place of energy for many students, which is why they return year after year. The students experience unforgettable emotions, bring creative ideas to life, and organize various competitions, lectures, and events.

“I really love how much nature there is here – I feel free and at peace. There’s a lake nearby, and we often swim. I’ve met Russian students, and we talk a lot – it’s great language practice for international students. Here, I’ve tried authentic Russian dishes, and I really liked them! We’re learning so much about Russian culture, and it’s incredibly interesting because everything is so different in Colombia,” said SUSU student David Calderon.

SUSU volunteers help international students adapt to Russian culture. They actively engage with the students, assist them in mastering the language, and facilitate communication with other campers. The volunteers also help organize recreational activities, sports, and cultural events for the international students.

“This is my first time at the camp, and I have so many emotions. The international students are very open, sociable, and positive. Despite some communication difficulties, we have a great time together, sharing our cultural differences. Besides the camp’s scheduled activities, we teach them various games and traditions related to our culture,” noted Ksenia Shivtsova, a student at SUSU’s Institute of Linguistics and International Communications.

Every day at the camp is filled with new experiences: forest walks, workshops, sports competitions, language practice, and other entertainment. Here, students enjoy the true atmosphere of a student summer and spend their holidays meaningfully.

“These ten days have changed my perception of Russian people. I used to think they didn’t like talking to others, but as soon as you approach them and start a conversation, everything changes. I’m so happy to be here – thank you, SUSU!” shared Al-Makrami Mohanad.

The “Olimp” student camp is part of the university’s recreational complex, located in the Chebarkul district (village of Nepryakhino) on the shore of Lake Bolshoy Sunukul. Every summer, from July to August, five themed sessions are held for students. Each one brings new experiences, personal growth, and unforgettable moments of student life.
