There are many unique spaces at South Ural State University where engineering students are gaining quality experience by working on modern equipment. One such space is the Laboratory of Experimental Mechanics of the Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, headed by Pavel Taranenko. He talks about how his career began, what inspires him to work towards scientific achievements, and what the team of the Laboratory of Experimental Mechanics does.
- For how many years have you been connected with the university?

Ekaterina Chekanova, a graduate of the Food from Plant-Based Materials programme of South Ural State University completed her studies in 2019. Ekaterina told us why she decided to connect her life with biotechnologies, what the educational process was like, and how she is building her career today.
– Why did you choose the Department of Food and Biotechnology?
South Ural State University actively cooperates with many universities around the world by participating in student academic mobility programs. 2500 students from 56 countries are studying at SUSU, gaining knowledge in various fields and specialties. The student exchange program between SUSU and Chinese universities has been existing for a quite a long time now. Each year, around 200 to 300 Chinese students come to our university, and this number grows year after year.
A postgraduate of the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science of South Ural State University is working on a project that has a great future. He is creating an ultrasonic jammer of sound recording devices. The development has already been recognized at the national level: the project was named among the best ones in the UMNIK competition of scientific and innovative projects.
Abubakar Yaro from Côte d’Ivoire and Fidele Benimana from Rwanda came to Chelyabinsk two years ago to apply for South Ural State University. The students note that they have never experienced such hot weather in Russia before.

SUSU scientist discovered new facts about the use of horses in the Bronze Age, working with materials from the monuments of Andronovo culture. As part of an international team from Kazakhstan, Russia and the USA, the researcher studied the age of animals found in the ancient mound, as well as changes in the skull, which indicated the use of horses by riders.

The Research Laboratory of Computer-Aided Modeling of Medicines works to identify substances that can fight the virus and “kill” it. The method will reduce waste and improve the quality of electrical products and, as a result, increase the economic efficiency of production by 30%.
