On May 15th, an online meeting was held between representatives of the Department of Food Technology and Biotechnology of the SUSU School of Medical Biology and representatives and students of Shenyang University of Technology (SUT), China. SUT first-year students, who are taking training under a joint-with-SUSU academic programme in Bioengineering in Food Productions, presented their reports in Russian on the topics of geographic and natural specifics of Chinese provinces, as well as on national and cultural traditions of their country.
Scientists from South Ural State University have patented a computer program that allows for highly accurate prediction of the physical and mechanical characteristics of aluminium alloy castings. This development was created as part of the research conducted by SUSU specialists jointly with regional enterprises.
"Zvezda" Multidisciplinary Engineering Olympiad, held by the Russian Engineering Union with the support of South Ural State University, has set records in all key indicators in the current cycle.
In the 2024/25 academic year, 580963 schoolchildren took part in the competition (by 27% more than the year before). More than 77000 schoolchildren reached the finals, and 7639 became winners and prize winners − this makes "Zvezda" the largest non-state engineering Olympiad in our country.
On May 19th, South Ural State University hosted a practical conference on the "Methods of Improving the Prestige and Quality of Engineering Education in the Fields of Mechanical Engineering and Metallurgy in the Chelyabinsk Region". Among the participants were representatives of 20 industrial enterprises of our region.
On May 16th and 17th, South Ural State University hosts an Open Forum on Ecology and Preservation of Water Bodies as part of the Ecology national project. This is a key industry event in the South Ural region, where opinion leaders, experts and innovators meet annually. The event included a traditional exhibition of scientific achievements by the university and partner enterprises in the field of environmental preservation.
The 4th Open Forum on Ecology and Preservation of Water Bodies, held within the frameworks of the Ecological Well-Being national project, began its work at South Ural State University. The forum brought together more than a thousand participants from 18 regions of Russia, including heads of large enterprises, government officials, scientists and public figures.
The annual “SUSU Is a Sports University!” festival, which brought together more than 3000 students, athletes, guests and residents of our city, was held at Elena Elesina Track-and-field Complex on May 16th. This year, the event is dedicated to the 80th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War and is organised in the spirit of the legendary 1980 Olympics.
The opening ceremony was decorated with a real Olympic flame, symbolizing the desire for victory, unity and sporting spirit.
International Museum Day is celebrated every year on May 18. Nadezhda Ivanova, Head of the Museum and Educational Complex, Director of the Museum the History of South Ural State University, and Yulia Vasina, Head of the People and Technologies of the Urals Museum and Exhibition Complex spoke to us about the importance of museums today, about the history of their formation in Russia, about the qualities necessary for this profession and many other things.
South Ural State University received a federal grant to create a network of engineering classes by winning a competition from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. The project will cover the Chelyabinsk and Kurgan regions.
Engineering classes are to be opened at the premises of general education institutions, where high school students will master the latest engineering and transport technologies. This work will be supported not only by South Ural State University, but also by industrial partners: AO Kurgandormash and the Automobile Plant URAL.
More than 1000 people, including students of the SUSU Military Training Centre, teaching staff and veterans, took part in a ceremonial formation on the square in front of the main university building of South Ural State University on the eve of the Victory Day on May 7th.
Maksim Gutenev, who is the Head of the Department of International Relations, Political Science and Regional Studies of the SUSU Institute of Linguistics and International Communications, took part in the Arctic Circle India Forum held in New Delhi May 3rd through May 4th, 2025.
On May 9th, Chelyabinsk once again joined the all -Russian campaign called the Immortal Regiment March. For the first time since 2022, the procession took place in a traditional in-person format. Together with our whole country, students, academic and administrative staff of South Ural State University carried portraits of heroes of the Great Patriotic War along the streets of our native city.
South Ural State University actively participated in the celebration of the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Rector Alexander Wagner, academic and administrative staff, and university students joined the city events, paying tribute to the feat of their ancestors.
In April, we will celebrate the 90th birthday anniversary of Irina Lazareva. She was an outstanding scientist and urban planner, one of the first to graduate with honours from the Faculty of Engineering and Construction of the Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute, the future Institute of Architecture and Construction of SUSU.
South Ural State University has received grant support within the frameworks of the “Artificial Intelligence” Federal Project of the “Data Economy and Digital Transformation of the State” National Project in order to create the “VirtUM” Centre for Top-level Academic Programmes in the Field of Artificial Intelligence.
A number of universities from all regions of Russia competed for the right to receive grants. Universities were selected at two levels: TOP-DS (“Top Data Science”) and DS (“Data Science”). South Ural State University was among the winners in the DS group.

Self-healing materials based on polymers are one of the “miracles” of modern chemistry. Research on self-healing materials is being conducted by the SUSU materials scientists and power engineers in a consortium with colleagues from the Institute of Chemistry of St Petersburg University as part of the implementation of the Priority 2030 program at the university.
Works on the third stage of the Chelyabinsk campus construction (the most content- and technology-intensive one) are in the next leg: building of the research and education and the multifunctional complexes has started.
On April 28th, the closing ceremony and awarding of winners of the 22nd Green Apple International Youth Festival of Marketing was held. This event is annually organized by the SUSU School of Economics and Management.
An annual regional “Young Specialists Are Builders of the Future” Forum has for the first time been organized at South Ural State University in Chelyabinsk on April 22nd and 23rd. This event facilitates the dialogue between students and employers, and helps see the promising directions for growth and development within one’s profession.
In order to participate in the program of the International Scientific Conference for Students, Postgraduates and Young Scientists "Lomonosov-2025" held in Moscow, a 3rd year student of the Journalism program of the Institute of Media, Social Sciences and Humanities Dariia Populova prepared a research paper on the topic of "Thematic Features of the Content of Student Media Centres of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation".
A spectacular final of the SUSU Miss and Mister 2025 contest has been held at South Ural State University. The participants have demonstrated creative performances, were tested for their fitness, knowledge and cooking skills, and what is more important — they proved that a true victory starts with self-perfection and conquering your own fears.
