Students of SUSU participated in Putnam Competition for the second time

William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, established and organized by the Mathematics Association of America, is the main mathematics competition for students in the USA and Canada. The competition began in 1938, and it has been held annually since inception, traditionally on the first Saturday of December, gathering around 2,500 participants. Competitions are held locally, then the jury’s decisions are sent by mail. This intellectual contest consists of two three-hour sessions with a lunch break. In each session, participants are given six problems to solve.

From 2008, a so-called mirror of this Olympiad has been held across European countries. On the Sunday following the first Saturday of December, European students solve the same problems in the same regime as their North American counterparts. Their work is checked not by an American jury, but by an independent European jury.

In December of last year, the Putnam Competition had been held for the 76th time, and the European mirror gathered around 250 participants from Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Russia, Estonia, and Turkmenistan. Russian competitors came from Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Tomsk, Novosibirsk, Rostov, Taganrog, Chelyabinsk, and Obninsk.

The international jury rigorously checked the Olympiad participants’ work for a long time, and determined the criteria for awarding diplomas to the winners and medalists, and now the results are in. SUSU’s students participated commendably! Aleksey Basmanov (Faculty of Mathematics, Mechanics and Computer Science, Group 112) received a second degree diploma, Yekaterina Anikina (Faculty of Physics, Group 242) – third degree, and Ravil Hairullin (Faculty of Mathematics, Mechanics and Computer Science, group 472) received honorable mention.
