Josephine Mengel (Germany)

Josephine Mengel Germany Bergakademie Freiberg (Freiberg Mining Academy) “I like the group in which I study, as well as our Russian language teachers.” ‒ Why did you decide to learn Russian language? ‒ I’ve been learning Russian at school for about 7 years. After that, I decided to continue learning it, but at a higher level. ‒ Why did you come to SUSU? ‒ I came to SUSU to study Russian language. I like studying here very much. I like the group in which I study, as well as our Russian language teachers. Yulia Viktorovna is a very good and kind teacher, who can explain understandably and, what’s most important, - teach. ‒ What do you think about Russia? ‒ Russia is very beautiful! People here are very good and kind. The language itself is interesting though difficult: so far, it is uneasy for me to learn cases, and grammar is hard to study as well. Regarding food, I simply adore pelmeni, borsch and pancakes!

Max Mueller (Germany)

Max Mueller Germany Bergakademie Freiberg (Freiberg Mining Academy) “I am grateful to SUSU for having the possibility to communicate in Russian and learn it with our teachers” ‒ What did you come to SUSU for? ‒ I came to SUSU to learn Russian language. I think that Russia is a very interesting country, and Chelyabinsk is a very beautiful city. Russian people are very good, I have a lot of acquaintances here. In fact, this is the first time I come to Russia, though I’ve been learning Russian for three years already. ‒ Who do you want to become? ‒ I am studying mining, so in the future I would like to work as an engineer of mining industry. I haven’t thought yet where exactly to work, in Russia or in Germany, but Russian language will still come in handy. I am grateful to SUSU for having the possibility to communicate in Russian and learn it with our teachers.

Lucas Liebscher (Germany)

Lucas Liebscher Germany Bergakademie Freiberg (Freiberg Mining Academy) “I like the fact that I can learn new words here and get a more profound knowledge of the language” ‒ What do you think about Russia? ‒ I like being in Russia, this is the 7th time I come here. In my opinion, people in Russia are kinder than in Germany; they are always willing to help, even if you address them on the street. Your nature is very beautiful: there are many green trees and beautiful flowers. I heard before that there is a lot of grey color and dirt in Russia, but it’s not true. Streets here are very clean and pleasant to walk on. ‒ Why did you decide to learn Russian language? ‒ In due time, my father recommended me to learn Russian language, because he used to learn it at school 40 years ago, and visited Russia more than once. Therefore, I’ve been learning Russian for more than 12 years already, and I like it a lot. It is important for me not to forget the language and keep communicating with Russian people. ‒ Why did you come to SUSU? ‒ I came to SUSU from Freiberg within an exchange program. I like the fact that I can learn new words here and get a more profound knowledge of the language. In Germany, I am studying to become a mining engineer. And there are a lot of mines in Russia in which I could work. So I would like to try my hand in here. SUSU in turn provides me with the necessary knowledge of Russian language. I get really good practice here. ‒ Have you found any friends? ‒ Of course! I communicate with all students from our group at the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language at the Institute of Linguistics and International Communications; besides, I know a few people from Chelyabinsk who left to Germany 1 month ago, but we had time to get acquainted.

The World of South Urals as Seen by SUSU International Students

The nature of South Urals is famous for its beauty and diversity. Lakes and mountains of the Chelyabinsk Region spark interest of not only Russians, but also among foreigners. The SUSU Center for Sociocultural Adaptation helps students from other countries discover the most favourite recreation spots of the residents of South Urals.

Recreation outdoors is part of the adaptation for international students. During excursions and trips they not only learn new things about South Urals, but also practice their Russian when communicating with the SUSU volunteers.
