"My biggest dream was to visit Russia"
– Why did you decide to apply to Russia?
– When I was a little girl, I came across books written by Russian authors. That was when my love with Russia began. It was my biggest dream at that time - to visit Russia and experience the famous Russian soul. So I started learning Russian at school in Sri Lanka. I felt I needed a lot of practice to really start speaking and understanding Russian. It’s such a difficult language to master! Anyway, I wanted to practice my Russian and what might be a better place to do that than in Russia? So I decided to apply to a Russian university.
– Why did you choose SUSU?
– At school I had some teachers who’d studied in Chelyabinsk. They then returned to Sri Lanka to teach students Russian. In Chelyabinsk, they’d studied at SUSU so they recommended the University to me. I’ve decided to jump at the chance and apply to SUSU. My teachers helped me with the application so it wasn’t that difficult to apply. My parents were so happy and proud of me. In my country not many people get a chance to study abroad so my study in Russia was very important to my family.
– What do you think about the overall experience?
– It’s very cold here and I was shocked when I first saw snow. I got used to the weather pretty quickly though. They celebrate the New Year so beautifully here! Chelyabinsk is magical during the winter holiday season with its piles of snow, sparkling window shops and people’s expectations of the miracle. The food here seemed strange at first but I like it now. The Russians like eating well. I don’t see students eating crisps or drinking coke all the time. Although, many Russian students eat pastries and stuff. Russia is a totally different country from mine, but it’s a wonderful experience. I’m happy I’m being part of all this stuff now.
– Are the people friendly?
– Most of them are. Russian people are believed to be reserved and cold. To some extent, I agree with this. Of course you can meet unfriendly guys here. But it’s part of any place in the world. I’ve met really wonderful people here, smart, sociable, and funny. And my SUSU teacher is such a person. She is so kind, I love her.
– Is the local area nice?
– Chelyabinsk is an industrial city, so be prepared to see some plants here. In Sri Lanka we have more trees of course. Despite that, Chelyabinsk is a beautiful city, especially at night. Although I miss my city sometimes, I like living in Chelyabinsk too. There are so many places you can go have fun here. I like Kirovka a lot (i.e. Kirova Street). They have a lot of shops and clubs there. And in the evenings people stroll along the street and relax...it’s a cool place!
– How happy are you at SUSU?
– I love this university. My experience here has been incredible so far. I’ve learned the Russian culture and made new friends. I feel more mature and experienced. Most importantly, I’ve managed to improve my Russian. I’d like to thank all my teachers for their incredible support and patience with me. Without them, I would’ve never started speaking Russian. After my studies, I’m planning to go back to Sri Lanka and start working there. I’d like to teach Russian at school or a university. I will definitely visit Chelyabinsk in the future.
– Any advice for other international students?
– Come and study here! Russia is a wonderful country. And the language is so beautiful! South Ural State University welcomes any student from any part of the world. Please don’t believe that Russia is all gloomy and depressing. It’s not true! Yes, you will be homesick; yes, it’ll be difficult to get used to one of the most difficult languages in the world. But in the end you get really good friends and one of the best experiences of your life. My advice is grab your warm coat and seize the opportunity to study here!

"I am happy to have a different experience"
– Why did you decide to apply to Russia?
– I started learning Russian at high school. The China-Russia relationship is pretty strong. Chinese people are interested in the Russian culture so many of us start learning Russian and try to have some study or work experience in Russia. I’m no exception. I’ve decided not only to practice my Russian language skills in Russia but also to try and apply to a Russian university. My major scientific interest lies in the field of chemistry, so that’s what I started looking for in Russian universities back then.
– What do you think about the overall experience?
– I feel like I’ve got tons of wonderful experience here. My studies have been going great so far, I’ve learned a lot of interesting things in chemistry. I’ve also made some great friends, Russian and Chinese. The city itself isn’t very big but it’s enough for me. There’s plenty of places here where you can have fun. And I’m happy I didn’t need to bother with the place to live in Chelyabinsk. I’ve got a comfy room in the dormitory.
– Are the people friendly?
– Yes, definitely. At first, it was difficult to socialize with my group. I felt a bit uncomfortable around so many people of different nationalities. I didn’t know how to behave… But then some guys just broke the ice and we started inviting each other to our places. We started supporting each other. Now we get on pretty well and I’m happy to be a part of such a great group. The teachers are also very nice and they care for me. I feel like if I have a problem, they will everything to help me. So far I haven’t had a proper chance to get to know Chelyabinsk citizens. I don’t think they’re too different from the rest of the world. Russia is just another country, just like any other place, and here you can meet a lot of wonderful people.
– How happy are you at SUSU?
– I am happy to have a different experience. Studying in another country is always something incredible. You become a much wiser person because you learn how to communicate with people different from you. Although in my opinion we all have more in common than we think. All students have the same problems, no matter what nationality they are. We all have the same fears of meeting new people and sharing our inner world. At SUSU every day is a challenge for me but in a good sense. So much is going on here, this vibrant student environment makes you feel alive and happy and thankful for what you have.
– Can you give any advice for other international students?
– Communicate! If you really want to know the language, and I’m talking about both English and Russian, don’t be too shy. People around are much more understanding and supportive than you might think. So be active and enjoy the best years of your life!

"Chelyabinsk is beautiful and safe city"
– What do you think about the overall experience?
– First of all, I’d like to say that Chelyabinsk is a beautiful city. Yes, there are many plants here, many factories but it’s modern and lively. It’s also safe. The people here are great. I have a lot of Russian friends who are always helpful and kind. They helped me to improve my Russian significantly. Right now I’m doing some research for my thesis in mathematics. I feel I’m blessed with the opportunity to study in a country where mathematics is at such an advanced level. I’m so excited about my studies here.
– What are you planning to do after graduation?
– After I receive a Ph.D. here, I will return to my country and work in a university. What I dream about is teaching here, at SUSU. But for that I need to speak Russian fluently. Spoken Russian is one thing but I also have to understand well the meaning of specific words in my field of research. It will take me some time to master Russian but it’s worth it. I know I’ll be a good specialist in my country but my heart is here, in Chelyabinsk at SUSU.
– Any advice for international students coming to study at SUSU for the first time?
– My advice would be to start learning Russian as soon as possible! When you come here, it’ll be much easier for you than if you just speak your language or English. Of course people here are comfortable with English but you can get your relationship with Russian students and teachers at a totally different level if you speak their language.
Nowadays environment’s acidification is a very pressing matter not only on the Ural. Accumulated acid gases promote acid rains’ formation. Their influence increases the acidity level in water bodies, which is fatal for fish, amphibians, insects and bacteria.
