“The place is just like somewhere in the US or UK”
– Why did you decide to apply to Russia?
– Well, I’ve decided to apply to Russia because Russia is a beautiful country and there is a good relationship between Russia and Iraq. There are many Iraq students who prefer studying in Russia.
– How did you get into SUSU?
– It was recommended to me by a friend who studied here. He did the same course as I am now.
– What do you think about the overall experience?
– I think it has been a good experience so far because people here are kind, especially when you ask them in the street, they try to help you. The weather here is kind of cold, but we got used to it. After all, it’s a beautiful country.
– Is the local area nice?
– I didn’t like it for the first time, because I came when it was the winter. But now it is different because you have beautiful nature here, especially in summer. So I like it now.
– Are there any surprises for international students at SUSU?
– From my point of view, as an international student, SUSU can offer a lot for the international students in terms of Master’s and PhD programs. They can offer good opportunities for international students in the future.
– How happy are you at SUSU?
– I am happy. I’m going to graduate after more than two years of studying here. I have significantly improved my English. I’ve also learned Russian, it’s an interesting language, and I’ve got to know the traditions and customs of Russian people. I’ve discovered that they are very kind and nice people.
– What are your plans after graduation?
– After graduation, perhaps I’m going to have to pursue my PhD here at SUSU, because they can offer a lot of opportunities. But we don’t know what the future will be like for us. I’d like to thank SUSU and Russian people for their kindness and help. Thank you, SUSU!
– What advice would you give to international students who are going to study at SUSU?
– I would like to recommend other students to study at SUSU, especially those who would like to do their Master’s programs here in English. They are going to improve their English a lot. SUSU can offer you an environment just like in the US or the UK. So, I recommend my friends to study here and to give this place a chance. Don’t miss this opportunity.

“You can enjoy your life while studying here”
– Why did you decide to apply to Russia?
– My first degree is philology and my Master’s degree is linguistics. I also have two postgraduate diplomas in archeology and psychology. In my childhood, I fell in love with Russian literature and I had a dream to go to Russia and study Russian language and read Russian authors in Russian.
– How did you get into SUSU?
– In Sri Lanka, people like Russia a lot. We have a Russian embassy where they have that Center for Russian culture. I’ve met a teacher from Chelyabinsk there, and she told me about SUSU.
– What do you think about the overall experience?
– Before I came here, I’d learned about the Russian soul from Russian authors. And when I came here, I realized the thing was true.
– Is the local area nice?
– It is a wonderful place. The Urals and Chelyabinsk are wonderful. There are lots of great places you can visit like Chebarkul, Zuratkul, Miass and Turgoyak (i.e. famous lakes in Chelyabinsk Oblast).
– Are the people friendly?
– I’d been worried about communicating with people from Europe and Russia. But when I came here, I realized it was so easy. People are friendly here.
– What are your plans after graduation?
– I love Sri Lanka and I love Russia. I want to have more experience here after my graduation. Russian language is like an ocean, I know only a little bit and there is so much more I want to learn. If I go to Sri Lanka, I will definitely have some great experience to share.
– What advice would you give to international students who are going to study at SUSU?
– When I first thought about studying in Russia, my friends and family didn’t support me, but I’d made my choice. After I came here, I realized it is the best choice I’ve ever made in my life. So, if somebody asks me “can I study in Russia?” or “is it good to study in Russia?”, I’d say “don’t think too long. The answer is yes”. And if they ask me where in Russia they can study, I’ll invite them to study with me here, at SUSU. It’s a great place to be. Enjoy your life while studying here.

“People here are so friendly”
– Why did you decide to apply to Russia?
– To be honest, it’s my bad luck. First time, I came here as a visitor and I met my girlfriend here. It was spring, it was so hot. I loved that weather and I thought it would be like that the whole year. So I decided to move to Chelyabinsk for my girlfriend. My thinking about the weather was my mistake. I applied here, then I went back to Egypt for one month and then came back again. Then the winter started, and I was crying like a little kid.
– What do you think about the overall experience?
– People here are so friendly, especially old people. I love them, they like talking. And once they know that I am Egyptian, they start to asking me so many questions. I realized they like Egypt. I also know that Russian people like art and poetry a lot. They have a famous poet – Pushkin. And I like drawings a lot.
– How happy are you at SUSU?
– I am happy because I’m here, I am happy because I have lots and lots of friends. I have friends from Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan…. My best teacher is Julia Viktorovna. I like all the teachers so much, I appreciate what they did for me.
– What are your plans after graduation?
– I don’t think I’ll stop my studies. I’m at my Master’s program now, and after that you have something called “aspirantura” (i.e. PhD), then “aspirantura-doctorantura” (i.e. Doctoral studies). I want to be a professor. I really want to be a professor. The studying will take 10 years, a long time. After these 10 years, if I’m still alive, I might stay here or not. I don’t know yet.
– What advice would you give to international students who are going to study at SUSU?
– I’ve already invited two friends to study here, and they came. At first, most of the Arab guys thought the language was so easy that they could speak Russian after one month or two. It’s a totally different story. You should spend a lot of time, do a lot of practice, and work really hard to learn this language.

“It’s a very big and good university”
– Why did you decide to apply to Russia?
– I’ve decided to come to Russia because I dreamed about traveling somewhere after my college graduation. Russia was a perfect place as this country is welcoming to everybody. I thought it would be great opportunity to learn how Russian people live.
– How did you get into SUSU?
– I went to the embassy, and they did some research for me. I wanted to study at some technical university because I like technology. So they found SUSU. Chelyabinsk is small city, but SUSU is a big university. I jumped at the opportunity and came here.
– Is the local area nice?
– The place we are living is very good for students, we have good rooms, we have good people, everything is clean.
– How happy are you at SUSU?
– I am very happy to study at SUSU, it is a big and good university. Everything is perfectly organized here, and people know how to teach foreign students.
– What are your plans after graduation?
– After my graduation, I want to go back and do some practice of what I’ve learned at SUSU. I’ll try to establish good relationships between my country and this university. If my people want to study abroad, I can help them with learning some basic Russian so that can study here, at SUSU. Maybe, I’ll come here for my holiday.
– Are there any surprises for international students at SUSU?
– I first came here with my sister. We started our studies together after the foundation program. After one year of studying, I started welcoming new foreign students coming to SUSU. They kept asking me “what did you do to learn Russian language”. I told them that this language is very easy if you live like a Russian, dress like a Russian, behave like a Russian, and all that stuff. It was exciting to try some Russian food, and my favorite soup is borsch, it is nice and it’ll stay in my heart forever.
