Industrial Revolution: SUSU, MMK and SMS Group Create a Digital Enterprise

Trilateral seminar on the topics: “Industry 4.0” and “Implementation of digital technologies” took place at the largest university of the South Ural.

In order to conduct the seminar, SUSU representatives, specialists of the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works and the leadership of the SMS Group Company gathered at the round table. The major goal of the event was discussing a joint project. First of all, the point at issue was about innovation technologies – the so-called “Industry 4.0”, or mathematical simulation of technology processes, in which MMK is interested.

“Today the world is switching to a new level of technology development. To principally new methods of obtaining energy and using digital technologies, to new approaches to processing global, cloud digital arrays. For example, mathematical simulation of technology processes at the MMK nowadays is implemented at full speed,” notes Rector of SUSU Alexander Shestakov.

In practice, simulation of processes is expressed in setting industrial equipment in such way that there is constant monitoring, situation analysis and adjustment of a process during the manufacturing process. The goal is decreasing power consumption and, therefore, the prime cost of products, and maintaining leading positions on the market.

“If we unite fundamental research of SUSU with industrial competencies of the SMS Group, in the result we obtain a unique mixture of knowledge and experience which will help exploiting equipment more efficiently,” emphasized Engineer in-chief of the OOO USC Pavel Bovshik.

It should be noted that earlier the SMS Group Company cooperated with the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works and with SUSU in the frameworks of different vectors. The project under discussion is the first collaboration of the three parties.

“Our company has been initially searching for a partner in academic environment. We’ve chosen SUSU because this university trains professional employees, develops unique technologies and conduct relevant experiments and research” – told Vice-President of the SMS Group Pino Tese.

We should add that the “Industry 4.0” seminar is just the beginning of the path. Further, SUSU, MMK and SMS Group are planning on conducting consultations, scientific research and cooperative work over the project.
