From Theory to Practice: How University Education Helps Students Find Their Calling

Many graduates of Soviet schools dreamed to do three important things: create a perpetual-motion engine, a teleporter, and a time machine. The then tenth grader Leonid Vakhrameev, like the majority of his peers, grew up on the science fiction novels of the Strugatsky brothers. Today, the Chairman of the Board of Directors at Intersvyaz is launching a time machine and sending readers to the time when he was an upperclassman choosing his future profession. What to become: a doctor, like his mother? Or an engineer, like his father?

The SUSU Academics Took Part in the Winter Psychological School in Saint Petersburg

Annually, in the course of the winter holidays, St Petersburg State University organizes the Winter Psychological School, a unique project with a rich scientific programme, which takes place in the middle of winter on the shores of the snow-covered Gulf of Finland. Participation in the School allows assessing the volume of the psychological community, enrich oneself with new knowledge, meet colleagues from the other universities and exchange contacts for further cooperation.

04.04.01 Chemistry (Chemical Informatics)

Major: Chemical Informatics Level: Master's degree programme Duration of training: 2 years Degree certificate: Diploma Mode of study: Full time Language of study: Russian Programme manager: Ekaterina Bartashevich, Doctor of Sciences (Chemistry), Associate Professor Description of the educational programme The educational programme is being fulfilled in the form of "project-based learning". Theoretical modelling of the structure of organic compounds at different-scale levels, and predicting the properties of organic polymers and biopolymers are in demand in a wide range of science-intensive tasks. This programme will introduce students to the basics of the methods of calculating molecular dynamics, docking, molecular modelling, utilitarian programming; teach students how to search for and analyse scientific information on their own; help them gain the skills in molecular-dynamic modelling of macromolecular and polymer objects. The project will result in creating a model of a polymer or biopolymer behaviour in solution, and comparing the in silico obtained characteristics to the available experimental data. The training being offered within a scientific research aimed at solving a specific problem will prepare students for independent research work and give them an early start to science, including thanks to the publications on the results of completing the project.
