SUSU Will Celebrate Its Anniversary by Opening New Laboratories and Holding Festivals and Exhibitions

On December 15 of 2018, South Ural State University is to celebrate the 75th anniversary from its foundation day. Active preparation for the celebration, which is going to take place within five days, 10th through 14th of December, is being carried out at SUSU. Celebratory event programme will include opening of new laboratories and exhibitions, as well as presentations, concerts, flash mobs, contests and more.

Culture, arts, sports

On December 10, events reflecting cultural, artistic and sport activities of SUSU are to be held. Opening of photography exhibition entitled “SUSU – a Bridge between the Future and the Present” is to be held at the Exhibition Centre. Photos will demonstrate stages of construction and historical development of the university from CMEI to SUSU, its research and innovative activities, educational process, social, cultural and sport events, outstanding scientists, leadership of the university, and other events which are significant for the history. Also, presentation of a start project entitled “Digital History of SUSU” – an Internet website dedicated to history of SUSU – is going to be held there as well. Participants of the event will have a review of photos, videos, audio records and digitalized documents which reflect development of the university. The most interesting facts that students and teaching staff of SUSU are sending within the “75 Interesting Facts about SUSU” contest will be cited. The event will conclude with an activity called “Bring Yourself a Memory”: all guests of the presentation will be able to send an anniversary-themed retro postcard to themselves, their friends or acquaintances.

Moreover, a new exposition entitled “Preserving Art”, dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the Arts Hall and the 75th anniversary of SUSU, is to be opened. The exhibition will display outstanding South Ural artists’ masterpieces from the collection of the university’s Art Museum. Schedule of the event includes meet-the-artist sessions with artists, open workshops on oil painting and graphics, as well as a fundraiser entitled “The Day of a Copier”, where students under guidance of their supervisors will try to copy the best artworks from the collection of the Art Museum in order to send them as gifts to social institutions of the city. Another celebratory exhibition is dedicated to the topic of pictorial art. The exhibition is called “From Design Students to the University”. Students will display mockups of formatting a number of science literature by the university staff and children’s books, and also present characters and elements of the signature style on T-shirts, badges, cups and other objects as well as projects by architectural space designers.

An exhibition match of Traktor Stars against Polytechnic Stars is to take place on the SUSU hockey arena. The teams will be represented by players who proved themselves on the sport arena and represented national teams at the most important international competitions. The team of Polytechnic will feature Head of the Chelyabinsk City Duma Stanislav Mosharov, coach of the Traktor Hockey Club Andrey Mezin, Master of Sport of the USSR Nikolay Sukhanov and Head coach of the Polytechnic Hockey Club, World Champion in Student Hockey 2018 Artem Pletnev. Among Traktor stars, spectators will be able to see the President of Ice Hockey Federation of Chelyabinsk Andrey Kudinov, merited coach of the Russian Federation, Director of the Traktor Hockey School Vyacheslav Ugryumov, Master of Sport of the International Class Sergey Gomolyako, and Olympic Games participant Sergey Yakovenko.

Among celebratory events of this day, an important role belongs to a student event –the Mister Campus contest finale. This is a large-scale event which includes workshops, photoshoots, preparatory stages, etc. In SUSU’s Activity Hall, finalists will present introductions of themselves and demonstrate self-prepared artistic performances. In a conclusion of each celebratory day, a caption saying “SUSU is 75” is going to light up on the main building of South Ural State University.

Achievements of Schools and Institutes

This day will be devoted to the activities of SUSU Institutes and Schools. It will start from the expanded ceremonial meetings of the Councils of Schools and Institutes devoted to the anniversary of SUSU. The meeting of graduates with the students will follow up.

December 11 will become a significant day for Institute of Engineering and Technology. This day will be the day of the opening ceremony of the memorial plate in honour of Aleksandr Timofeevich Poletsky, Professor who contributed a lot to the development of Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute. The event is connected with the scientist’s 100 anniversary. A.T. Poletsky’s foundational scientific papers in the field of hydrodynamic theory of lubrication gained worldwide renown. He prepared many graduates who later made names for themselves in science and engineering. School of Economics and Management in its turn will demonstrate the newest material and technical foundation of the university. In SUSU Centre of Business Development Technologies, there will take place a test drive of an enterprise of lean production processes. The participants will be acquainted with the main principles of lean production, learn to reveal the values and losses in the activity of a company, try the tools of lean production in practice. 

In honour of the anniversary at SUSU, for the first time, ILIC International Fest language festival will be held. The programme includes lectures in TED Talks format, workshops, and bright musical performances. The festival participants will learn the Singhalese writing, learn how to adapt quickly to China and be acquainted with the peculiarities of teaching Russian to foreigners, as well as listen to lectures on self-development in English. School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science will hold an Open Scientific Seminar “School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science: Education and Science for Industry 4.0”, where the representatives of key employers, partner enterprises, leading researchers and graduates will take part. The reporters will present the results of the most significant applied projects implemented jointly with the key partners. Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics has prepared a series of lectures-presentations devoted to Scientific Schools of Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Representatives of the Institute will tell about the major scientific areas, which are conducted by their scientists.

Faculty of Pre-university Training organizes another significant event. This day the Forum of winners of Zvezda (Star) Multidisciplinary Engineering Olympiad will take place on the main stage of SUSU, which takes place annually on the basis of South Ural State University. At the end of the day, Rector Alexander Shestakov will meet with SUSU veterans. Currently, the university has 1159 veterans, half of whom continue to work at the university. Representatives of the pedagogical dynasties of the university, which have been formed at the university since its foundation will also attend the meeting.

Science and Innovations

South Ural State University pays special attention to scientific activities. The telethon “Science and Innovations at SUSU”, which will begin at 10:00 on the air of SUSU-TV Television and Radio Company and the University’s social networks will be devoted to this direction. The editors of the university channel prepared documentaries, essays, and reports on the development of the leading scientific fields, outstanding scientific achievements of the university scientists and promising directions of development within the framework of Project 5-100.

An exhibition “From Chelyabinsk Mechanical Engineering Institute to the University of Global Digital Transformations” will take place in the main building of the university. An exposition “Science and Innovations - Answers to the Digital Challenges of Time” will present the innovative developments of the university research teams. Among them, there will be Vanya the robot, Coriolis flowmeter, simulators, virtual reality emulators and much more. For the guests of the university, Publishing Centre of SUSU has prepared an excursion exhibition “From Optima to Cloud: History of the University Publishing”, where scientific and educational publications of the university from different years will be presented starting from the 50s years of the 20th century to the present times. Here everyone will be able to see the equipment used in the University Publishing Department in different years – from a typewriter and analog copiers to a modern digital printing system.

The SUSU Scientific Library will host a photo exhibition “SUSU Leaders 2018”. The photo gallery exhibits include portraits of staff members of the Rectorate’s Office, directors of institutes, deans of faculties, heads of directorates and structural divisions, heads of departments and professors who have gained recognition among their colleagues. Students and guests could also attend the exhibition of outstanding scientific works and publications of SUSU scholars in the Scientific Library, where the results of the competition “The University’s Book” would be reviewed. At the same time in Room 1007 there will be an awarding ceremony of lecturers and staff members on the occasion of the University’s anniversary. In addition, the results of the competition “Alma mater” will be reviewed.

The staff members of the Institute of Law will meet on the third day of special events devoted to the anniversary of SUSU. Alumni of the Institute of Engineering and Technology will gather in the modern academic building “Sigma”. The organised events will help the attendees reminisce about a proud history of engineering faculties, and Director of the Institute Sergey Vaulin will talk about the current state and development prospects of the Institute. An excursion to leading Chelyabinsk enterprises will be organised for the guests. They will visit the enterprises that SUSU has been actively cooperating with for many years, namely Chelyabinsk Pipe Plant, Metran, Reginas, and Konar.

International activity

Over a long history South Ural State University has truly become a multicultural university – today students from former Soviet Union and other foreign countries are studying here. The results of work in this direction will be announced on 13 December. The opening ceremony of the brand studio “I Love SUSU” will be the first in the row of festive events. The brand store will highlight the multicultural nature of the university. Any student and staff member could buy the bare essentials needed for studies and work, starting from stationery and to electronic devices. In the brand studio one could find backpacks, T-shirts, hoodies, gift sets and other goods with the University’s brand.

One of the key events of this day will be presentation of the network of partners of SUSU Pushkin Institute. The staff members of the Pushkin Institute will present the network of partners consisting of Chinese universities, established as part of the task of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation within the project ““Establishment and Development of a Network of Pushkin Institute Centres (no less than 8) in the PRC on the basis of Institutions Providing Education in the Russian Language”. The presentation will focus on the events organised by Pushkin Institute Research and Education Centre in Chinese universities – professional development courses for teachers of Russian as a foreign language, workshops on Russian phonetics, Russian and Russian for Special Purposes online Olympiad, demo classes for Chinese students.

The Rector will host a welcome reception of foreign delegations this day. At the meeting, representative of 10 partner universities and THE Ranking Agency from People’s Republic of China, Bulgaria, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, UK and South Korea will make congratulatory speeches. Moreover, the SUSU Association of International Alumni will be established in honour of the University’s anniversary. There will be also the opening of the second stage of Laboratory of Mechanics, Laser Processes and Digital Production Technologies, which is run by Professor Philippe Bertrand. The Laboratory works in close cooperation with the manufacturer of metallurgical equipment SMS Group.

To honour the special university occasion, a 75th Anniversary of SUSU: Golden Pages book has been released. The publication describes the history of the university, the milestone events, the most significant achievements, and the current status of the university. Quite a few pages were devoted to the outstanding alumni of the university. Many of the students who graduated from SUSU have accomplished a lot in their careers. And many of them will attend the presentation of this book, and will meet their mentors.

In the beginning of the 2018-2019 academic year SUSU introduced project-based learning — a new format of educational technology. In this context it is especially significant to mention the presentation of an International Interuniversity Project on Multi-Purpose Journalism: Project-based Learning Experience. This is a unique studying guide elaborated under the editorship of the Dean of the Faculty of Journalism Liudmila Shesterkina, and intended for teachers and students involved in this new educational technology.

Within the frameworks of the Eurasia in the Ancient Times presentation of the studies by SUSU archaeologists and foreign scientists, which is going to be held at Pushkin Hall, the results of joint projects of the university researchers and their colleagues from Hungary, Kazakhstan, Sweden, and the USA will be demonstrated. Students and guests will also be able to take a look at the most impressive moments of the archaeological field studies and to learn about the most promising trends for further international collaboration. As part of the celebrations the 20th International Youth Cooking Festival will also be held. It is planned that the festival programme will comprise five sections: Cooking and Class of Service; Confectionery; Art Design; Art Model; and International Cooking Traditions. The fourth day of the celebrations will close with an anniversary meeting of the members of the International Scientific Council.

Happy Anniversary, Alma Mater!

The fifth day of the celebrations will begin with a ceremony of raising of the flags of Russia, of the Chelyabinsk Region, and of SUSU at the university square in front of the Main University Building, and after that a flower-laying ceremony will be held at the Gallery in Memory of the Outstanding SUSU Scientists. This will be followed by a meeting between the Rector and the members of the Supervisory Board, tours around the university, and a photo session.

Representatives of other major universities of Russia will say their words of greetings to SUSU this day. SUSU Rector Aleksandr Shestakov will host the reception of the official delegations from Russian universities, and after that the representatives of the Russian Federation higher education school will have an opportunity to get a closer look at the major university in the Chelyabinsk Region and one of the top universities in our country. Later Aleksandr Shestakov will hold a meeting with the representatives of the government authorities and the business community of all levels.

A general gala meeting and a concert show will be held at the Activity Hall. The academics, administrative staff, students, alumni, and guests of the university will be welcomed by the actors of Mannequin Theatre Studio and will be guided towards a photo session zone, where they will have a chance to take a picture with KVANTUM robot and ask it any question about the university. Also, live music will be played by the SUSU folk band near the Activity Hall. The celebrations programme will include: 3D laser projections show, greetings from top managers and partners, new performances by the creative teams of the university, and other pleasant surprises. The climax of the event will be a premiere of a song about the university performed by the solo singers and choirs of the Recreation Centre. The celebration events will wrap up with a traditional fireworks show at the university square.
