The impact of even the most modern and powerful batteries on the process of work is caused by a number of factors including climate. Therefore there is a need to take this influence into account and reduce its negative effects.

The development of systems that would ensure optimal mode of operation of batteries in a variety of conditions is one of the research areas of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Systems in Motor Vehicles and Tractors. Post graduate students, Anton Andreev and Vyacheslav Kalmakov, are conducting research under the guidance of Doctor of Engineering Sciences, Professor Aleksander Vozmilov.

‘We learned about the ‘U.M.N.I.K.’ program of our fifth year of education and started the development of the subject during our master studies; with this topic our master thesis has also been associated. This is our third participation in the competition - says post graduate student of the Department of Electrical Equipment Anton Andreev - the main goal of our study was to improve the efficiency of the batteries. Within a few years we have continued to develop this idea, have carried out error analysis sessions, and in the third time our development has been appreciated by the expert committee’.

Creating a system which improves performance and extends battery life is not an easy task. Young scientists were asked to develop a system that is a container for batteries from insulating material inside which the heating elements and the cooling fans are placed. The operation of the system is carried out by a controller which collects the information from the sensors and controls the operating parameters of the battery. For instance, if the outside temperature is low it is possible to produce extra heating, and if the battery has been operated in emergency mode for a long period of time it can be cooled.

Questions of the members of the expert committee concerning technical issues related to energy consumption and the algorithm of functioning of the development and implementation of the project. Post graduate students were asked about the target audience of such systems as well as how they plan to implement it.

At the moment young scientists are conducting a joint research with the Centre for Alternative Power Engineering of South Ural State University. The area of possible commercialization of the development includes consumers requiring autonomous power supply (remote villages, small farms, various engineering constructions).

To bring the design to the finished product the students need to conduct research related to the creation of mathematical and computer models of system, to specify calculation parameters of the system, to optimize the algorithms of the controller, and to conduct laboratory and field tests.

Among the 10 winners of the contest in the section "New devices and hardware systems," graduate students won the right to conclude the state contract with the Foundation for Assistance to Small Innovative Enterprises in Science and Technology to perform research within the stated theme of the project in the amount of 400 thousand rubles.

‘We are grateful to our supervisor, Aleksander Grigorievich, as well as the administration of the university. Carrying out research and creating technical developments require significant investments. For many scientists it becomes a barrier to realization of their ideas. Such competitions involving project financing open up new opportunities for self-realization of young scientists and in this regard we are very lucky,’ - say Anton and Vyacheslav.

ОIt should be noted that the development of the system of monitoring and maintenance of optimal conditions of functioning of energy storage units of autonomous power plants operating in severe climatic conditions is not the only direction of scientific work of the Department. We will write about the development of the system of control of electric engine of an electric race car  in our next article.
