A new production of composites with adjustable geometry and characteristics is to be launched by scientists from the South Ural State University (SUSU) in cooperation with OOO M-Profil (Miass). Now a team of specialists is developing honeycomb prepreg composites. The work is carried out within the framework of the New Materials direction of the Ural Interregional REC.
Composites occupy an increasing share in the world market of materials. They have excellent mechanical properties. At the same time, the structures created from them are lightweight and durable. A creative team consisting of scientists from South Ural State University and representatives of an industrial partner is working on the project “Production of honeycomb core from prepregs based on carbon, glass and basalt fibers by continuous molding”.
Experts intend to regulate the mechanical characteristics of composite materials. This process will allow the production of a material based on the necessary properties of the structures created from it. Optimization of the properties of composites for production tasks is possible using prepregs - semi-finished products of composite material, consisting of a fibrous reinforcing filler and a binder applied on both sides. Also, the technological option of changing the diameter of the honeycomb core cells allows you to adjust the substance properties. It is made from composite materials through a process of expansion and corrugation.
“The technical feature of this project is a fundamentally new approach to molding (shaping process). It is supposed to organize a continuous process, which significantly expands the scope of the studied composite materials,” said Denis Vinnik.
As a result, the team plans to launch a new production of honeycomb composite. The material should arouse interest among enterprises in the automotive and space industries. In addition, it can be used in other projects of the Ural Interregional Research and Education Center "Advanced Production Technologies and Materials".
South Ural State University (SUSU) is a university of digital transformations, where innovative research is carried out in most priority areas of science and technology development. Following the strategy of scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation, the university focuses on the development of large scientific interdisciplinary projects in the field of the digital industry, materials science, and ecology. In 2021, SUSU won the competition under the Priority 2030 program. The university performs the functions of the regional project office of the Ural Interregional Scientific and Educational Center.
The Ural Interregional Research and Education Center "Advanced Production Technologies and Materials" created within the frameworks of the Science National Project, will unite the potentials of educational and scientific organizations, enterprises, and companies of the real economy sector of the Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk, and Kurgan regions with regard to conducting applied scientific research and engineering developments of world-class level, creating competitive technologies and products and commercializing those, as well as to training specialists for solving scientific and engineering tasks to achieve breakthrough development in the priority fields and enhance the competitiveness of the economies of the entities within the Center’s area.
