The first orienteers entered the University in 1963 (Vladimir Yakovlev, the future coach of the team, was among them), and orienteering was initially tightly bound with hiking. The team participated in the First Russian Student Championship in Leningrad (as the only team from Chelyabinsk) only to take the opportunity to go on a trip around Karelia. As years in training continued, the club consistently strengthened (along with the hiring of full-time coach Vladimir Peregudov) and Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute became one of the strongest institutes of the Soviet Union in orienteering and won multiple Russian and Soviet Student Championships.

34 students of Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute, Chelyabinsk State Technical University, and now South Ural State University were awarded Masters of Sports of Soviet Union and Russia. A dramatic example of high level of orienteers from Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute is the fact that the only student team that has ever won high-ranked multi-day relay«ILVESTEADE» was the women team from Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute consisting of Olga cherepanova, Tatiana Kadysheva (Zlobina) and Svetlana Sukhareva(Korneeva).

Leading sportsmen were also the members of Soviet Union and Russia national teams. For example, Igor Zakharov was the member and the leader of Soviet Union National Student Team multiple times. The mention of his high results at Nordic Championship was the first time when soviet orienteers were written about in Finland newspapers. Anna Ustinova won World Junior Ski Orienteering Championship twice.

Today, the University team is the winner of Chelyabinsk Oblast Championship and the Urals Cup "May Meadow" (photo: SUSU team with the Urals Cup).

Students and graduate students of Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute, Chelyabinsk State Technical University, and South Ural State University have always been actively participating in the organization of the championships and preparation of orienteering maps. By their efforts, many extremely difficult regions were covered, including Elanchik lake, Chernaya Village, Lake Turgoyak, and total number of orienteering maps prepared is around 50.

The 21st century introduces a new tradition of multi-day university competitions. These competitions are officially opened for all participants from 13 to 55 years old. In 2001, 215 athletes from 5 regions of Russia participated in the First Championship, 270 orienteers from 6 regions of Russia, Khabarovki Kray and Israel participated in the Second one, and the Third Championship hosted320 athletes from 8 regions and Kazakhstan. In 2004, 340 athletes from 8 regions of Russia participated in the competition. In 2005 the Championship was held close to Mokhovaya Mountain in Miass and hosted 390 athletes from 11 regions of Russia. In 2006 the competition once again was held near Miass.

Moreover, in 2005 the University organized Russian Orienteering Championship at an impeccable level. The board of Russian Student Sports Union came up with the proposal to hold World Student Championship at SUSU in 2008, for the first time in Russia ever.

Orienteering is an intellectual sport that develops, apart from physical fitness, memory and speed of thought, which helped 7 University graduates to defend candidate's thesis, and Georgy Volovich defended doctor's thesis in Engineering.
