SUSU Applicants Constructed a Car

There is a School of Engineering Reserve existing within South Ural State University’s Automobile and Tractor Faculty. Under supervision of Master’s degree students and postgraduates, attendees of the School, pupils from Chelyabinsk, designed and constructed a real car.

Student Constructors’ Bureau at SUSU’s Institute of Engineering andTechnology started implementing a new project – the School of Engineering Reserve, within which Master’s degree students and postgraduates of the Automobile and Tractor Faculty teach school children to design models of car, format engineering documentation, and construct cars for further testing. The School prepares young engineers for admission to the Automobile and Tractor Faculty and for participation in engineering competition among students called “Formula Student”.

Head of the Student Constructors’ Bureau, Grigoriy Salimonenko, told us about the goal of the project implemented by the School of Engineering Reserve:

“Together with Master’s degree students and postgraduates of the Automobile and Tractor Faculty, we are working on a major project: we are creating an electric race car within the university’s project called ‘Formula Student’. At the School of Engineering Reserve we perform training of children for this project. Attendees of the School will try themselves as workers of all divisions that exist in our primary project. This will give them a chance to visually comprehend the process of a car creation; and then, having become SUSU students, they will be able to continue their work together with adult engineers within the Formula Student project.”

Presently, there is a small group of participants. Students divided into groups, and now everyone is working on their part of the car. By working in the project for juniors, school children learned to produce 3D models of some parts of a car and format engineering drawings which will be used to produce details for the real car. In a result, school children under the guidance of their supervisors constructed a real car.

At the next stage of work, school children will start on the economic component which includes calculation and compilation of a business plan.

“During classes, we constructed structural model of a buggy,” says attendee of the School of Engineering Reserve, Sergey Borisov. “I like teachers and their programme. I don’t regret coming here, because I want to construct a buggy and take part in car races.”
