Rector’s Hour: Aleksandr Shestakov Tells about Prospects of Studying at SUSU

A meeting of Rector Aleksandr Shestakov with the enrollees and their parents was held at South Ural State University. In the course of the event the 2018 university applicants were told about the advantages of studying at SUSU, and their most topical questions were answered.

An important topic touched upon during the event was SUSU’s status in the scientific and educational space. According to data of the most authoritative rankings, the university is part of the world’s elite in terms of education. This year the university was listed in TOP 1000 of the world’s best universities according to British consulting company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). Moreover, SUSU took the 526th place in the World Subject Ranking under Round University Ranking (RUR) in the category of engineering sciences. The development of South Ural State University is being facilitated by the fact that it became one of our country’s leading institutions of higher education included into Project 5-100— program on competitiveness enhancement among the world’s universities.

“The university can give a student everything s/he needs so that s/he could become an in-demand specialist. We offer good academic programs, high level of professors and lecturers, ties with employers and we give an opportunity of get a decent job not only in our region, but also within the Russian Federation, and abroad as well; a possibility to develop one’s creative talents and go in for sports,” names SUSU’s key advantages Rector Aleksandr Shestakov.

It is possible to obtain quality education at SUSU due to the fact that here the required material and technical base is provided for, which includes scientific centers and laboratories, where students can gain practical experience in training and research activities. Eight international laboratories guided by the leading scientists from France, Great Britain, and other countries are functioning in the university. Also international programs of inclusive education are being actively developed at the university, as well as academic exchanges with foreign universities has been arranged, and the number of Double Degree programs with universities in Europe, China and several universities in Kazakhstan is increasing every year.

The university gives a chance to take training in elite education groups, for which academic programs with advanced training were created. Moreover, this September at SUSU a new educational technology will be officially introduced – project training, which will allow students create their own youth projects with support from their lecturers and potential employers:

“We have collected quite a big number of projects from our partners among employers, various organisatons and enterprises. Those are the projects during the fulfillment of which students learn to create real products as needed by organisations. The curriculum is built in such a way that students could receive serious fundamental and theoretical knowledge. Students who will be studying under the project training system will become significantly more competitive as compared to many others,” notes Aleksandr Leonidovich.

SUSU pays special attention to learning foreign languages, and many programs offer continuous advanced language training, which will allow our university graduates apply for jobs in world companies. As important is SUSU’s orientation at the field of digital transformations, most in-demand in the modern world.

As of today, SUSU is the only university in our region featuring the Faculty of Military Education, the graduates of which can easily apply for service in government authorities since they undergo military service while studying at the university and are not subject to call after they graduate. It is noteworthy that men who did not undertake military service are not eligible for government jobs or for working in law enforcement agencies.

One of the important topics discusses were the options of payment for education for contract students.

“The price of studying in Russian universities, which is determined by the Russian Federation Government, varies depending on the institution’s category. For universities with high status in the world’s rankings and recognized among employers, the cost of training is set higher. But for the SUSU enrollees an Affordable Contract program was created which provides flexible terms of paying for education,” notes Deputy Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Yulia Bolotina.

According to the signed contract you may pay monthly the 1/10 of the year fee before the beginning of the every calendar month via Gorod payment system. A second option is paying for each semester. Also you can pay the whole amount for the whole academic year at once. Moreover, SUSU provides a unique opportunity to pay for your education from your maternity fund. The university supports talented freshmen by taking into consideration their school-studying achievements. Both state-funded and contract students can be paid scholarships in the amount of 10,000 roubles per month during the first semester. Such scholarship is paid to students who are admitted with high EGE points, or as per results of internal admission tests, as well as to winners and prize-winners of Olympiads admitted without exams, and winners of Zvezda (Star) Multidisciplinary Engineering Olympiad applying on the same terms as everyone else.

In the course of the meeting the enrollees and their parents learned about the extracurricular university life. Students from other cities and foreign citizens can be provided accommodation in the dormitories located in the Campus near the SUSU’s main building, as well as in other districts of our city. SUSU assists in finding accommodation for rent among the apartment owners, who have agreements with the university to lease apartments to the university students on easy terms. Students can also fulfill their potential in groups of the SUSU Creativity Center, which are known well beyond the Chelyabinsk Region.

In the end of the event SUSU Rector, vice-rectors, and directors of the schools and institutes answered questions of the enrollees and their parents.
