A New Approach to Competitive Enhancement: SUSU Team “Boosted” Their Managerial Skills at a Workshop in Skolkovo

From the 9th through the 14th of April, the SUSU team took part in an education program of SKOLKOVO Moscow School of Management entitled “A model of globally competitive university” and targeted specifically at managerial teams of the universities participating in Project 5-100.

The university’s delegation included: Evgeniy Belousov, Director of the 5-100 Program Office; Gleb Radchenko, Director of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; Aleksandr Demin, Director of the Institute of Open and Distance Education; Olga Yaroshenko, Head of the International Affairs Division; Liudmila Lapina, Head of the Ranking Cooperation Department; Aleksei Vasilyev, Head of the Marketing Department; Aleksandr Shishkov, Head of the Polytechnic Institute’s Department of Electric Drive and Industrial Automation; and Evgeniy Iogolevich, Deputy Head of R&D Department.

In the course of the program, all representatives of universities 5-100 were divided into seven teams by the following themes: research activity, educational activity, innovation studies, financial policy, strategic partnerships, campus and management system.

Team members sharpened their skills in project and strategic management within the frameworks of World University Rankings simulator of university management.

Also, SUSU representatives learned about up-to-date problems of universities’ development, the tendencies that are changing the system of education in Russia and around the world, the vision of Project 5-100 from the perspective of the Ministry of Education of Russia, analysis of dynamics of the main Project 5-100 indicators, the Global Shift Skolkovo’s globalization strategy, and the Scolkovo-HKUST strategy of global partnership.

In the course of training, participants of the session had a chance for real-life chat with the leading experts in the sphere of education and project management. The following speakers presented their reports at the session: Petr Shchedrovitskiy, Executive Board member of the “North-West” Foundation at the Center for Strategic research, Head of the Department of Strategic Planning and Methodology of MEPhI National Research Nuclear University; Andrey Volkov, Director of the Institute of Social Strategy at SKOLKOVO Moscow School of Management; Steven Dekrey, Deputy Rector of Business School at HKUST Honk Kong University of Science and Technology; Elena Kolesnikova, Deputy Director of the Department of State Policy in the Sphere of Higher Education, and other experts.

“Participation in the program of SKOLKOVO School of Management helped me systematizing the knowledge that I already had about project management, to assess the possibilities of strategic planning from a new point of view, and get acquainted with experts in the sphere of project management implementation in other universities participating in the competitiveness enhancement Program 5-100,” notes Director of the 5-100 Program Office, Evgeniy Belousov. “Participation in such programs helps switching the way of thinking from strictly technical to strategic. This will help us all to take a fresh look at the possible pattern of plans and achievements of the university in the future.”
