Office of Academic Writing Participates in a Training Seminar for Staff of Offices of Academic Writing

A training seminar on editing English articles was held for the staff of offices of academic writing and editors of English-language Russian journals on October 18th-20th at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration under the President of the Russian Federation (Moscow). Representatives of the centers and offices of academic writing from several Russian universities took part in the seminar. The SUSU Office of Academic Writing was represented at the seminar by Ekaterina Nenakhova, senior lecturer of the ILIC Department of Foreign Languages, coordinator of the Office of Academic Writing’s academic programs, academic writing course teacher.

The organizers of the seminar included Nature Research Academies (Great Britain), the Ural Federal University Centre of Language Excellence (Yekaterinburg), Association of Science Editors and Publishers (Moscow), and the Russian Writing Centers Consortium (Moscow).

The Editorial Development Manager of Springer Nature (Nature Research Academies Division (Great Britain)), Jeffrey Robens hosted the seminar.

Jeffery Robens is a highly-qualified specialist with 20 years of experience and many publications and awards. J. Robens received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania and has worked at various scientific organizations and universities in Singapore and Japan, including RIKEN and Kyoto University. Currently he holds training seminars all around the world as Editorial Development Manager of Nature Research, helping article authors improve the quality of their publications. His experience is especially in demand among those authors for whom English is not their native language.

The three day seminar focused on developing skills of efficient editing for scientific writing. The students learned to work with a logical structure and ideological composition of text, which determine the success of the article being prepared. The seminar included lectures, discussions and practical lessons focusing on testing the students’ editing skills.

Ekaterina Nenakhova shared her impressions with us.

“Participating in these kinds of seminars always means something new and interesting. Although academic writing has certain rules, every person will find some nuances which he did not notice before. Besides training I was able to speak with representatives of centers of academic writing from Russian universities and share experiences. Work of the SUSU Office of Academic Writing was of great interest to the audience since we offer the widest range of services for our authors, including holding courses for advanced studies in academic writing.”

Yekaterina Nenakhova will share the information she obtained at this seminar in a master class planned for tutors of SUSU’s schools and institutes at the end of November.
