SUSU Is Ready to Facilitate Development of Geoinformation Technologies in Cuba

Today, September 19th, a delegation from Cuba has completed its visit to South Ural State University.

The goal of the business visit of the delegation from Cuba to SUSU was to discuss the prospects of international collaboration. Within the framework of the visit two meetings were held between the SUSU Rector Alexander Shestakov, the Director of the RSSU Russian-Ibero-American International Center Berenice Najera Cervantes, and the Rector of the University of Guantanamo Alberto Turro Breff, the latter noted:

“This visit gave us an opportunity to get a closer look at SUSU and understand in which fields our collaboration with your University is possible.”

This opinion was encouraged by an event-filled program of the visit. The members of the delegation from Cuba visited Public Research Institute Test Mechanical Engineering, Research and Education Center “Nanotechnology”, Supercomputer Simulation Laboratory, PlantWeb Laboratory, Group Training Fitness Hall at the “Institute of Sport, Tourism and Services”; Scientific and Manufacturing Institute “Academic Techniques and Technologies”, Laboratory of Energy Efficient Technologies in Metallurgy and Modern Materials, Research and Education Center “Geoinformation Systems”, as well as the SUSU Museum.

The vast program of familiarizing the delegates with our University resulted in deep interest of Mr. Alberto Turro Breff in collaborating with SUSU in the field of geoinformation technologies, as well as regarding technologies of searching for alternative energy sources. Besides that, the Rector of the University of Guantanamo expressed his willingness to organize joint educational programs both for postgraduate students, and programs of advanced professional training for the employees of the Cuban university based on exchanging knowledge and experience between our scientists and their colleagues from Cuba.

“Due to difficult meteorological conditions in Cuba, with our frequent hurricanes and weather cataclysms, the studies of the “Geoinformation Systems” Center are very topical for us. As of today, our specialists have undergone training in this field in China, where we purchased software and equipment, but our staff lacks competence to use the gained apparatus to full extent,” explains Rector of the University of Guantanamo.

The university rectors concurred that it would only be logical to start with fulfilling of the set plans at present moment.

“Today we are willing to be the initiators of holding a scientific conference in Cuba within the framework of which we could exchange our knowledge and experience in the field of geoinformation technologies. It would also be possible to organize scientific lectures and workshops at this forum which could be held by the SUSU scientists for the employees of the University of Guantanamo. After such a conference there could be an opportunity to discuss further ways of collaboration in this field between Russia and Cuba,” concludes SUSU Rector Alexander Shestakov.

Moreover, the heads of the Russian and Cuban universities discussed possible joint projects on searching for alternative energy sources, as well as the prospects of providing postgraduate education for Master Degree students from Cuba at South Ural State University.
