SUSU Student Mentors Ready to Meet with First-Year Students

The South Ural State University System of Student Mentors has held its last academic day.

The students’ training lasted 6 days, throughout which the candidates attended special lectures and seminars. On the first day of training, around 260 students arrived, ready to become helpers for the university’s first-year students. Over two days they, working with the elder mentors, received information about the university, academic and extracurricular activities, and about mentorship. They trained their speaking skills, learned to motivate students, and how to work in a group.

On the third day of training, a test was held for the candidates with open questions on knowledge about the university, at the end of which 149 people became mentors. On the fourth and fifth days of training, the consultation center TOP-500 worked with the mentors. The center and mentors developed a three-hour training session which the mentors will hold with their first-year students in the first week of university lessons. The training session is dedicated to getting to know each other, cohesion, and understanding student life.

The final moment of the training was awarding certificates to the beginning mentors.

“The closing went very well! We awarded the mentors with the symbol of our student organization SSM – this is a special notepad for mentors, a bracelet, and stickers. We also held competitions from the Joint Student Council and we awarded the winners with gifts. On August 31st, after the formal portion of the event, the first meeting between mentors and their groups was held. This will become the first day of joint work between the mentors and first-year students,” says the head of the System of Student Mentors, Valeria Chachina.
