Goals

The Laboratory of Mechanics, Laser Processes and Digital Production Technologies opened in 2017 under Project 5-100. The laboratory focuses on accelerating the implementation of additive manufacturing in Russian industries to improve their productivity and competitiveness and nurturing qualified engineers with hands-on experience in the field.

About

Additive manufacturing uses data computer-aided-design (CAD) software or 3D object scanners to direct hardware to deposit material, layer upon layer, in precise geometric shapes, to create an object. By contrast, traditional manufacturing requires the removal of material through various means to create the desired object. The Laboratory of Mechanics, Laser Processes and Digital Production Technologies conducts research to create advanced powder coatings with laser cladding and detonation spraying.

The research team is involved in the research on powder hot pressing, surface engineering, advanced coating design, and materials development and processing. The laboratory features the latest equipment for mechanical, adhesion, and powder testing, physical process modelling, and laser and detonation spraying.

Achievements

  • The research team has developed new methods of hot pressing for mechanical engineering and metallurgical industries and offered innovative approaches to tool design.
  • The laboratory presented a product sample with the surface restored by laser cladding at Innoprom, Ekaterinburg (2018).
  • Headed by Marina Samodurova, the research team is working on several projects in collaboration with the large industrial organisations in Russia: ChelPipe and Russian Electric Motors.
